Jaycie was born in Cardiff, Wales, to a French mother and Welsh father. She was a naturally quiet child and for the first six years of her life, the Simples lived a happy existence. Norelle, her mother, was a tailor and seamstress, while Jason, her father, was a Police Officer. When Jaycie was six years old, her mother gave birth to a baby sister (Jenna) who was the complete opposite of Jaycie. Jenna was a baby whose birth had several complications and was a difficult child to care for, and eventually the sleep deprivation and stress wore away at Jason's sanity. Jenna was around three months old when Jason finally snapped and shook the crying baby to death, with young Jaycie in the room. He was understandably horrified at himself when he realised what he had done and later suicided, unable to live with his actions.

The consequences of the sudden deaths of half of little Jaycie's family left deep scars on her young mind: she became incredibly withdrawn, loud or aggressive actions and noises frightened the life out of her and she battled with post-traumatic stress for several years afterwards. Her mother, now a widow with a young child, struggled to make ends meet whilst she braved her daughter's and her own scars alone. They were never in one place for a very long period of time, as Norelle would go where the rent prices were lowest. She considered returning to France but never had the means to. Norelle and Jaycie moved to just about every town in Wales, the longest stay lasting about 10 months. Norelle, after seeing how disjointed Jaycie's education was becoming - not to mention her detachment from the other children at school - made the decision to homeschool her, which seemed to work well in both their favours. Jaycie learned in both English and French, and her mother taught her as much as she knew.

When Jaycie's Hogwarts letter arrived, the two were both shocked and delighted. However, they had their fears of Jaycie leaving to attend a boarding school: Jaycie did not wish to leave her mother and only friend to be surrounded by strangers for months on end, nor did Norelle welcome the idea of being alone whilst her daughter was away at a strange school with no option but to fend for herself. In the end, Norelle made the decision and would not stand for Jaycie not attending and missing such an unexpected opportunity. While the periods apart were difficult, they fell into a routine. They sent weekly letters that somehow managed to omit the aching loneliness they felt, but Jaycie came home for every break without fail. Around Jaycie's second year, Norelle found an affordable place by the Welsh coast and decided to stay and set up shop downstairs, whilst living upstairs. Her seamstress business flourished and Norelle felt stable for the first time since the death of her husband and child.

Meanwhile, Jaycie found herself growing so quiet she was almost invisible and mute. She spent most of her time exploring the expansive grounds or tucked away in the library, trying desperately to keep her grades up. Reading was difficult for her, because of her dyslexia, and so she found she had to spend twice as much time working as the other students in order to pass each year. There were a small number of people who tried to take an interest in the detached Jaycie, but she would not open up or hang around long enough for people to befriend her properly. Jaycie soon found that she was excelling without pain in Herbology and, in her third year, Care of Magical Creatures. She found great pleasure in the practical elements of both subjects and became totally immersed in them both in and outside of class, finding comfort and solace in the natural world. The rest of her Hogwarts career was dictated by Oustanding grades in Herbology and COMC, and high marks that came of hours of hard work for her other classes. Jaycie was pleasantly surprised when she received her invitation to MAE and immediately chose Dragon Training as her major, certain that this new branch of care would only expand her confidence and her passion.
