Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyMon Nov 23, 2015 5:14 pm

Summer was coming to an end, and Ariel knew she ought to enjoy it while she could. She'd always loved the winter more than summer, but between those two was three months of gusty breezes and annoyingly shifting weather before the cold really settled in. That's when she loved winter. But summer was a great season, and she wanted to enjoy it, suck it up as much as she could, before those three horrendous months started. And what better way than to go down to the Laguna Beach? She'd been there a couple of times before, both of the occasions extremely pleasant. She'd met new and interesting people whom she'd never seen again, but that was okay. That was the fun of it.

But Ariel had to admit to herself that her game of getting friends was not panning out the way she thought it would've. She'd gotten friends all right, but none that she thought she could properly depend upon. However, what were the chances of that happening anyway? She barely trusted her own parents. She kicked a stone with her flipflops, her mood having suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Not a good thing; she'd planned on being happy today!

That's when she saw the pier. Yes, good idea! A smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she walked all the way to the end of the pier, and it was a pretty long one at that. She stood at the very edge, looking out at the ragged ocean: yes, winter was on its way. It made her almost feel giddy. Of course, she knew she was being ridiculous, it was a while until winter was there, but the gusty ocean stretching all the way until it met the sky, making a beautiful line in the horizon, made her hopeful for what those last months would hold for her. Hopefully, more friends.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyMon Nov 23, 2015 9:17 pm

As summer was nearing its end Humphrey found himself looking forward to the coming year at the academy. Even though he hadn't made many friends there somehow the place had still ended up feeling like home. The classes were great, and there was always something to do if you looked for it. Before classes started though, Humphrey was going to make sure he enjoyed himself. Which was why he headed down to Laguna Beach to enjoy a beautiful summer day. There was a cool breeze that helped with the heat and he found himself smiling as he walked towards the cliffs. Walking up right to the edge, he then took a seat and looked out over the horizon, wondering what was in store for him this year at Merlin's.

After looking out over the ocean for a little while he got up and made his way down to the pier. Humphrey had the urge to dip his toes in the water to cool off a little. While he was walking towards the end of the pier he noticed somebody already there, and hoped they wouldn't mind a little company. It was kind of calming hearing the sound of the waves breaking against the shore, and he found himself glad he'd come out here today. His summer had been pretty boring for the most part, the only interesting things happening at Scrivenshaft's where he worked. That would change though when school started again.

Reaching the end of the pier, he bent down and untied his converse before slipping them off along with his socks. Humphrey set them aside and then sat down on the end of the pier, dipping his feet in the ocean as he did so. "Hope you don't mind a little company." he said, turning to look at who was there. She seemed vaguely familiar, and he thought he'd seen her around the academy a few times. Didn't know her name though, or anything about her other than she went to the academy with him.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyTue Nov 24, 2015 2:09 pm

Ariel's gaze shifted from the horizon when a particularly strong wave crashed against some of the nearby rocks, a few of the droplets hitting her feet. She smiled against the light breeze and wondered briefly what the next year would have in store for her. Perhaps she got to make an amazingly difficult potion, or have them hunt for extremely rare ingredients that only the more skilled people knew how to handle. The skilled people basicaly being the ones who was at the academy. But her thoughts quickly drifted. One; because keeping a train of thought going in your head wasn't easy. Two; she could hear someone walking up behind her.

Looking back over her shoulder, she saw a guy she was certain she'd seen before. He was probably one of the students; he looked the right age for it. She might've seen him at social gatherings, or just in that one potions subject everyone had to take. He sat down on the pier and dipped his feet into the water. Ariel only then realized how refreshing that looked and smiled to herself: she'd be doing that soon herself. And then he spoke up. Ariel's smile widened and shook her head, though he might not even see that, since he looked pretty focused down on the waves. "Not at all, company's great," she simply said and sat down next to him, taking off her flipflops.

The water felt chilling on her feet as she dipped them in, but it was really great. Maybe she ought to even go for a swim at some point. "You go to the academy right?" she asked, looking over at him. "I'm Ariel," she said before looking back to the horizon. The sky looked so intense where it met the ocean. Sometimes, Ariel really wished she could draw, because if she could, that would be it.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyTue Nov 24, 2015 2:27 pm

While he watched the ocean he found himself wishing he'd brought his swimsuit along with him. The water was a nice temperature and it would be a great day to go for a swim if only he'd have thought of it earlier. Humphrey briefly considered trying to transfigure something suitable but discarded the idea, Transfiguration had never been his best subject and he'd probably end up ruining his clothes instead. Kicking his feet back and forth in the water, he let himself slowly relax. Something about the cool feeling of the waves lapping against his feet was comforting to him, and he found himself smiling a little.

When she said she didn't mind, Humphrey nodded. "Thanks, this is a nice spot." To his surprise she sat down next to him and slipped off her flip flops, and he figured she must have thought his idea of sticking his feet in the water was a good one. Looking at her, he tried to remember a name but still couldn't place it. He was fairly sure they had a general potions class together so he was sure he must know it, but it continued to elude him. His eyes moved back to the ocean, watching the ripples from the steady breeze across the water.

Startled out of his thoughts by her question, Humphrey looked at her again. "Yeah, I go to Merlin's. I'm in the Dragon Training program. You go too, right? I think we may have a potions class together." Reaching out his hand to give hers a shake, he replied. "I'm Humphrey, nice to meet you Ariel. It's a beautiful day, isn't it?" he asked.

PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyTue Nov 24, 2015 2:37 pm

At the remark of the place being a nice spot, Ariel merely nodded. It really was; she didn't know how it had eluded her for so long. Then again, she'd also missed the fact that there was a Quidditch pitch on the school, which was super weird, considering how obsessed she was with the sport. Maybe she simply wasn't the most observant of people. But right now, that didn't much matter; she'd found it now, right? And it was a nice spot. She'd probably be coming here more often. The thought of how this place might look when winter came made her feel all giggle-y, and she knew she'd probaby enjoy the beauty then as well, even though it might be a tad colder.

Ariel made a small 'o' with her mouth when he said which program he took. Ariel had wondered about the programs herself for a while. The dragon program had been what she'd first leaned towards, but potion was her one and true love, so after a long time considering it, she'd finally landed on potioneering. She shook his hand when he stretched it out and smiled. "Nice to meet you too, Humphrey," she said happily. It was always great to meet new people. In her mind, at least, and as long as they were decent, new people.

"So, what's the dragon program like? Do you enjoy it? I do potioneering myself, but I did seriously consider that one first," she explained to him, voicing her previous thoughts. She wondered if he'd gotten hurt, and what kinds of dragons they had studied. But more than anything, she wondered if she'd chosen the right subject. Not because she regretted doing potioneering, but simply because she wondered if dragon training was even better, though she couldn't really see how.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyWed Nov 25, 2015 5:12 pm

Humphrey let his mind wander as he looked out across the ocean, finding himself watching the clouds slowly drift by. For some reason he had always loved the water, it was just calming to him. He promised himself to do some swimming while the weather was still warm enough to enjoy it. Out of nowhere he found himself feeling a little sleepy and yawned, then leaned back to stretch a little. It was probably the sun getting to him a little, he figured. Leaning down, he filled his hands with water and splashed himself in the face to help wake him up a little bit. After all, it wouldn't do to fall asleep after just meeting somebody.

He automatically smiled back at her, giving her a firm handshake before letting go. Humphrey was glad he'd walked down here today, Ariel seemed nice. Looking over at her, he began to wonder why she'd come out here. "Any particular reason you came down to the beach today? Or just enjoying the last little bit of summer we have left?" he asked her. Of course, you didn't always need a reason for coming down to enjoy the beach on a lovely day. Sometimes he found his way down here for no reason at all, other than it just felt like the thing to do.

Thinking over her question, Humphrey tried to figure out a way to describe the dragon training program. "I love it, really. There's a lot of studying, learning how to take care of them and the differences in the breeds. When you get to work with the dragons it's really scary, but also pretty cool I think. Glad I picked it, think it's the right fit for me. Now potions I could never do. Horrible at them. Do you like it?" he asked in turn. If he hadn't done dragon training he thought he might have tried to be an auror, but he was happy with his choice.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyWed Dec 02, 2015 2:21 pm

After letting go of his hand, Ariel simply shrugged at his question. Other than enjoying the summer, she really had no other reason to going down here. Of course, she might have done it, because she knew the chances that she'd get into a conversation was rather large, and honesly, Ariel has missed talking to people that she hadn't known all her life. And this Humphrey guy seemed pretty all right. "Nah, not really," she finally said, her feet dancing back and forth in the water. "I figured it was time to soak up the sun before autumn properly hits." She offered him a big grin at that and then turned back to the water. It was so magical, just the way the light would break in the waves. She suddenly had the urge to jump in. "What about yourself?" she asked, looking at him sideways.

Ariel laughed as he said it was pretty scary, but cool at the same time. "I'd think it'd be terrifyingly cool myself," she stated. Meeting a dragon had always been a dream of hers. How amazing wouldn't that be?! Sure, the kelpie in Loch Ness was very interesting too, but often it wouldn't even break the surface, which was a bother when she really wanted to inspect it. She was ripped from her thoughts when he asked if she liked potions. A soft, solemn smile spread on her lips. "Aye," she said softly, "I absolutely love it. It's so-" she stopped, trying to find the right word, looking at the waves "-intense. So intense. And refined! And seriously, potions is superhard. And I'm really grateful that I can manage it. In return, I suck at things like charms and astronomy, despite being a huge fan of the stars," she added casually.

The stars had always amazed her. So far and looking so small, yet knowing that they'd be a billionth time larger than her. Actually, the sun was a billion times larger than her, and since the Sun was the smallest star... "The universe is so freaking vast," she said, not really noticing that she said it at all. But it was mesmerizing. Just like the ocean. She let out a small giggle at that thought. "So, what's the weirdest thing you've done at the academy up until now?" she finally asked, looking at him with a curious stare.

Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey]   Bring Me That Horizon [Humphrey] EmptyWed Dec 02, 2015 5:16 pm

The comment about soaking up the sun made Humphrey smile a little, and he gave her a nod. "Now that I can understand, it's beautiful up here but the weather can be frustrating. Soaking up the sun doesn't work well for me though, I just try to avoid getting burned." he said with a chuckle. Tanning was never going to be something his pale skin would go along with. He didn't really mind all that much, but he did always have to remind himself to protect his skin with sunblock if he was going to go swimming. "I guess I came because the water's always been calming for me. Next term is starting soon and even though I love the program I always feel a little nervous. A lot of it is probably pressure I put on myself to do well. Being around water...it helps." Humphrey admitted. Usually being this open with someone terrified him, but Ariel felt like a person he could trust.

From the way she said it Humphrey could tell she really would love to meet a dragon. She wasn't in the program, sadly; however, maybe he could ask the teacher if there'd be a way for her to meet one. Probably unlikely, but there was no harm in asking. "Maybe you will get to meet one. Something tells me you'd enjoy it." he commented. Seeing the smile spread on her face at the question was good to see, Ariel had found the right place. "Intense is a good word for it. Having to be so precise and perfectly focused for it to work right is a challenge. Definitely a useful skill, though." he said. Potions was a skill he'd worked hard to get better at, in hopes that with enough practice he'd be able to brew the Wolfsbane potion for himself. Most months he still tried, but it was more out of habit than anything. The ones that complex would always remain out of his reach.

Out of nowhere he heard her comment on the universe being vast and couldn't help but agree. "Yeah, it really is. It's kind of crazy to think about how much time it would take to reach just one star." Humphrey replied, imagining it. He had read science fiction where it could happen, but it was still a lot to comprehend. Her question about the weirdest thing he'd ever done at the academy immediately sobered him and he stilled. Immediately he thought of the first full moon he'd had at the academy, and when he'd gone swimming the morning after. How he'd been found by Tess, the sibling of a professor, and she'd helped bandage some of his injuries. That was definitely top of the list, but he wasn't sure if he could tell her that. "Umm...one time I explored a supposedly haunted cabin in the forest. Never figured out if it was or not, but there was definitely some funny things going on there. Somebody else came out there too, we talked a little bit." he told her, going for something a little less strange than telling her he'd had wounds attended to by what had essentially been a stranger. "What about you?"

Ariel nodded in agreement and was about to reply when he added that he just tried to avoid sunburns. Ariel had to chuckle at that. «Yes, I think my lotion is on 35 or something. I know one or two things about being burned myself,» she said lightly, beaming at him. «But I was very surprised when I saw that Avalon was about as beautiful as the campus itself. So I agree, it really is worth coming here just for the view,» she added, «As for the weather, I’m not the biggest fan of rain, but I’ll easily be persuaded to go dancing in it.» She gave him a happy smile at that. She had always been very positive, and not even the rain could ruin her mood. Sometimes it even improved it. She nodded at what he was saying and smiled when he finished. «I definitely agree with that. The pressure of the school is actually pretty high, and sometimes I really just don’t want to get out of my bed. But when I get to class, I’ll always be surprised at the interest it peaks. But water is extremely calming, even when it’s chaotic,» she said. This guy was proving to be a better social companion than Ariel could possibly have hoped for in a stranger.

The mere thought of actually meeting a dragon, had Ariel perk up and look hopeful at Brian. «I really hope I will!» she exclaimed; she knew she could attend some of the other classes, that the professors didn’t mind if there were students not in that particular major, so she had often considered going to a dragon class. But whenever she wanted to go, she was always swamped with other stuff to do, like work or essays or even potions. And she knew she had to dedicate herself completely to potions if she wanted to be one of the most successful potionsbrewers in the world. She had ambitions, and she knew that ambitions often demanded sacrifice. She nodded; potion was very useful, and she loved the art more than she loved dragons. «I want to be the best potionsmaster in the world,» she said, not even realizing she’d said it before it was out of her mouth. She gave a soft smile. «I don’t know if I can do it, but I’ll sure as hell try.»

Reaching the stars. Something her parents would always talk about. She couldn’t tell if they were being serious or not. Alchemists had tried for years to replicate the power of the stars. «I wonder what they are. I mean, aside from gas and all that. Like, what’s their core? How are they created? That’s actually really interesting to an alchemist. I don’t think even Nicolas Flamel knew what to make of stars,» she added thoughtfully. She trailed from the thought when he said what he’d done. Ariel grinned, she’d also inspected the cabin, and she’d met Brooke there. «I love that place. And I agree, something is really suspicious about that cabin. Honestly, if that place isn’t haunted, I don’t know what is,» she said with a grin, «Then again, they believed the Shrieking Shack at Hogwarts was haunted, and it turned out to be the howls of a werewolf,» she said humorously. She’d been amazed at the story of Remus Lupin, the werewolf that had been allowed as a student at Hogwarts. It was in moments like those that you somehow understood how great a man Albus Dumbledore had been.
