Braelynn trudged to the owlery, clutching the letter she had written to her family. Sadness filled her heart and she heaved out a quiet sigh. She made it a point to write to them weekly, telling them of everything going on in her life. She'd told them about Travis, Mac and the gigs she'd gotten at some pubs. She'd been downright frustrated and disappointed to learn that classes had been cancelled. If she'd known earlier, she knew she would have made plans to visit her family. She didn't know when she would next see them. Now, all she had left to occupy her time were those gigs, which she enjoyed, and her waitressing job at Eureka, which she didn't quite enjoy.

Sighing again, she entered the owlery and picked an owl out, giving him the letter and address. She wished Harmony was with her but she'd wisely left her back at the dorm, unsure of how she would react to the other birds. She stood at the window and watched as the owl took off with her letter and hoped that it would reach her family safely. Although she had regular weekly replies from them, she couldn't wait for the next letter she received from them. Any news from home comforted her and motivated her to study harder and get better grades for them. She knew they expected quite a lot from her, being the only Muggleborn in the family, and she worked hard to try and please them. She knew though, that they wouldn't ever condemn her or make her feel guilty if she did fall short of their expectations.

Unconsciously, she began quietly humming one of the songs she'd sung with Travis at their first gig. She'd always resorted to music to console her and sort out her thoughts. It was the one thing that was constant in her life and never let her down, except of course when it proved elusive during some of her songwriting times. It was her escape though and she never let it go.

A brown barn owl had found her while she was relaxing on the Academy grounds. She took a letter off of the owl's foot. Her name was written in Lorcan's messy handwriting, the twins may have been identical but their handwriting wasn't.

She read over the letter which detailed his adventures thus far. Unlike her Lorcan and Lysander had taken traveling instead of a Academy. They were learning plenty though, through their hunts of various magical creatures.

She read the letter and once she was done, stuffed it into her pocket. Melody took the owl which was content with perching on her arm, to the owlery.

"Hello," Melody said when she noticed someone else there.

As Braelynn hummed, it turned into soft singing. It was always like that with her. Once inspiration struck and she started, she couldn't keep it low. She had to sing it out. It sometimes posed as a challenge to her when she'd think of something during class and had to be content to write it down in sol-fa since there was no way she could burst out in song in the middle of a lecture.

Singing turned her thoughts to the gig she and Travis had at Eureka. She'd managed to convince her boss to let the both of them entertain the customers for one night and after much persuasion, her boss gave in. Thinking that she should practice a little, Braelynn changed her random singing to one of the songs she'd planned to sing during the gig. It was 'Say Something' by a Muggle artist called 'A Great Big World'. She hummed a few different notes to get the right key then dived right it, enjoying scenery the window afforded her.

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you
    Anywhere I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

She'd gotten ended the second chorus when a voice broke through her singing. She stopped abruptly and swung around to see if the greeting was meant for her. Seeing no one else around, she concluded that it was and broke into a wide smile.

"Hi. I'm Braelynn," she introduced herself. Then thinking that she should explain why she was singing in an owlery she continued. "I was just sending a letter off and practicing for a gig I have in a couple of days."

As she spoke, she tried to recall if she'd met the girl before and hazily recalled seeing her around, probably the mandatory potions class. She liked meeting new people. It was always interesting to learn more about other students. After all, she couldn't pass through the academy locked up in her dorm composing songs.

"Sorry for interrupting. I'm Melody." She had recognized the song although she did occasionally fall behind on muggle artists, it was hard to keep track while not living in the muggle world and she knew that once she graduated she might end up forgoing that world completely so she could focus on her career.

"A gig? Interesting. What is your band called?" She made her way around and carefully set the owl down and made sure that it wouldn't fly off yet. "I got a surprise letter from my brother." Lysander's letter probably wouldn't be far off and she didn't know if they were sharing an owl. She found a place to sit and then got out some parchment, ink and a quill out of her bag.

"Oh, it's not a problem at all," Braelynn assured. "It's nice to meet you!" Braelynn refrained from telling her new acquaintance that she almost named her parrot Melody. She knew some people found it offensive that they almost got the same name as an animal. She'd made that mistake once and determined to never make it again.

She held back a chuckle as the girl questioned her. It wasn't the question. That had nothing to do with it. It was more so that she and Travis weren't technically or officially a band even though, more often than not, they performed together. They didn't have a name, just their individual ones and most of their acts had solo performances from each of them. Braelynn wasn't quite sure how performing with Travis became a regular thing. It just happened. But she was more than happy to go along with the current because besides meeting and knowing Travis, it was the best thing to sing with him. There was no other feeling like it in the world.

"Yeah. I finally got my boss to agree to let us, perform there," Braelynn replied. "And we're not really a band band. We're kind of just...two people who love music and somehow ended up performing together." There really was no way else to describe it.

"That's nice," Braelynn commented in response to Melody's statement about her letter. "It's always comforting to hear from home." Having a big family and being used to a lot of noise in her home, it was a sudden change for Braelynn to come to Merlin's. News from home always brought a smile to her face even if it was small news like how the garden and animals were doing.

"Do you have a big family?" Braelynn inquired.

"Nice to meet you two," Melody said. So they weren't a band but it still sounded like they had fun. Melody had used to run around singing with the birds when she was little but the thought of mentioning it embarrassed her. She didn't think that she could perform in front of a stage anyway.

Melody considered the question, there was her parents, grandfather, two brothers and some relatives on her father's side. Still it wasn't exactly a huge family, nothing like the size of the Weasleys.

She shook her head. "Not very big at all. I have two brothers though." She dipped the quill and started writing out her letter. The ink pot was enchanted so it didn't spill out into her bag. When she was done she folded up the letter, wrote Lorcan's name on it and tied it to the owl's leg.

    "What about you?"

"You know, if you want you can come and hear us," Braelynn invited. "We're at Eureka this weekend."

She had no intention of showing of or rubbing in other people's faces her relative success in the music path. She wasn't like that at all. The invitation was born out of a desire to share her music, something that was important to her. It could be likened to an author publishing a book - for a voice to be heard. It wasn't for fame or fortune, though that had a tremendous weight in the music industry. It was more like she couldn't keep the music within her and it had to bubble out somehow before she exploded.

Braelynn nodded as Melody told her about her family then grinned widely at the question. "Oh, I have a large family. I have four brothers and one sister. And of course, parents," She paused for a while, a wistful look dawning in her eyes then gave a small laugh. "It makes for a very noisy household. And that's excluding the cackle of the chickens, neighing of the horses, snorting of the pigs and lowing of the cows," Braelynn said, counting it out on her fingers. "Not to mention the noise of the tractor and plow," she added.

It was funny how when she was in the midst of all that noise, she wished for some occasional peace and quiet. Now she had both in abundance at the academy and yet she found herself wanted the comforting noise of her home. But that's just it, isn't it? When you have something, you wish for something else and when you have something else, you want back something. It's the way the world turns.

"I might do that," Melody said. She didn't usually bother with concerts, too crowded and noisy. Listening to something on the wizards wire or taking her old muggle radio out and switching though the stations was much less bother. But there had been some ones she'd enjoyed and she appreciated the inviation.

"There are my parents and other relatives as well," she said. "But we don't all live and my brothers went off travelling a while ago." There had been the fair share of noise. She remembered one time when the Potters had visisted and James had helped the twins blow a hole through the roof. Nothing like all being crowded together on a farm though. She assumed that it must be a muggle farm. Did wizards have farms? They certainly wouldn't use tractors. "I hear the country is a nice place to live."

Certain that she wasn't going to add anything more to its leg, the owl flew away. "What major are you?"

"It's a restaurant with great American food. You can bring your friends along if you like," Braelynn replied then quickly added, "not that I'm pushy or anything like that. It's completely up to you." Braelynn disliked making people feel they had to do something because she suggested it. She wanted them to do it because they wanted to do it. It would be their own decision then and that made it all the better because then it would be genuine.

Braelynn perked up when Melody mentioned travelling. "I want to travel the world someday. I mean it would be so exciting to see other places and the different ways people do things. Like you know in Thailand, it's rude to sit with your legs extended out in front of you. You have to sit cross-legged or with your legs under you," Braelynn said. She hesitated before venturing with the next question, "May I ask where they've traveled to?" Braelynn knew that some people liked to keep things personal and usually tread lightly when she just met someone.

She let out a small chuckle at the girl's comment. "Well," she dragged out. "There are some nice things and some not so nice things. It's really peaceful and amazingly beautiful. My dad owns the family farm so that means loads of work for us but we enjoy it." Braelynn paused with a thoughtful look then continued, "But it's a long way to the nearest town so we don't get to go out much." She never regretted her childhood though. She had wonderful memories of playing in the river and up in the trees and frolicking all around the vast land her dad owned.

"Oh, I'm a Healing major. Number one choice from the beginning," Braelynn replied with a smile. She hated seeing people in any type of pain and tried to do everything in her power to help them.

"I'll look it up," Melody said. It sounded like it would be in the muggle world, it had been a while since she had been there but she could handle it. "Because I'm curious about it," she hastily added. "Its not that I don't believe you."

"They are in the English mountains now. They haven't been to Thailand to my knowledge." She considered telling Braelynn about the time some guy hired both of them to check out a magical creature related rumour about his property in Canada but decided not to. She couldn't really tell it the way they did.

"I guess there are pros or cons for living anywhere. It still sounds nice. Ah, Potioneering was always my first choice. I considered double majoring with curse breaking but that's been dropped from the curriculum so its just as well that I didn't."

Braelynn nodded with a small smile and dropped the subject. If Melody was interested in hearing them sing, then that was good. If not, that was also fine. Braelynn wasn't one to constantly be on someone's back until they did what she would like them to do. She believed people were entitled to their own opinions and choices. The most she could do was explain and give all the information needed. Everything else was up to them.

"Oh, wow," Braelynn replied. "That's cool. I've always loved the mountains." Derbyshire was quite hilly but nothing as majestic as the English mountains. "And I haven't been to Thailand too but I read about it somewhere. The difference in culture is amazing." Braelynn enjoyed reading and learning about other countries and their cultures and ways of living. It was all very fascinating.

"Yeah, it depends what you're looking for," Braelynn commented then continued, "So how're you enjoying Potioneering so far? It must be exciting to brew and create potions. They can be tricky." Personally, Braelynn had no passion for potions. It wasn't that she hated it or anything. It was more like she didn't enjoy it so much. Perhaps having to remember so many different ingredients and their characteristics played a part. Oh, she loved the feeling that came with the success of a potion but that couldn't compare to the feeling of having healed someone. The knowledge that she had just helped someone and put them out of misery and pain was one thing Braelynn cherished besides music.

Melody was glad that Braelynn had dropped the subject. She would show up or she wouldn't but she hated to promise anything. She would just end up feeling bad if she couldn't make it.

"The difference in cultures around the world is amazing. I used to read all about it when I was a kid." She wasn't sure if she'd enjoy travelling. There were various ways of travel that she didn't like, her first time using the Floo network had been scary and she was never comfortable on a broom. Apparating often left her dizzy but some of the muggle ways of travel didn't sound too bad. Maybe flying wouldn't be so scary in the safety of a plane where there were things to hold onto.

Melody nodded. "I've always loved it! I've never been really been able to explain why I like it so much."

Braelynn smiled. This girl didn't say much but she seemed nice enough. It was a good thing she could be chatty when she wanted to. And it was also good to get to know someone, especially when you were away from home. It helped a little with the home sickness.

"Yeah? If you could visit one country, what would it be and why?" Braelynn asked casually to keep the conversation going. "I think I'd like to go to Switzerland. Visit the Swiss Alps maybe. I'm so used to being on relatively flatlands it would be nice to get to higher ground. Mountains are so majestic. And I've heard their food is a must try." Braelynn knew she was rambling but she tended to do that when the person she was talking to was relatively quiet.

She nodded. "It's important to love what you do otherwise it can be so tedious." Braelynn had learned early on how to turn a tiresome duty into something she could enjoy. It was essential when she had to wake up at five in the morning to milk the cows, feed the chickens, muck out stalls and everything else required on a farm. She'd learn the different quirks of each animal and use them to amuse herself. That and the fact that competing with her siblings made the work a lot more fun.

"So what do you like to do in your free time?" Braelynn asked. Asking about the other person's hobby was a go-to conversation starter. She found that it let the other person talk more and open up a little since they were talking about something they liked.

"Uh..." Her mind had gone blank after hearing the question. Really she had never planned out what the best place to travel would be. Lot's of places were interesting but nothing could come to mind. Melody listened to Braelynn's ramblings. "That sounds nice. I don't know. Maybe Ireland, the marshes sound like an interesting place to draw. I could take my family along to search for Nessy."

"Yeah. I like to learn about new things though, I suppose that's why I was a Ravenclaw."

"Reading books. I on and off take up drawing. Its surprisingly easy to just lose track off. Sometimes I don't draw anything in months. What about you?"

"Its great to meet a fellow Ravenclaw." For some reason Melody found herself thinking back to the blue gown she had worn to the school's ball.

"Wow. I wish I had that much of a passion for something. Sure, there's potions and reading but I couldn't talk about it the way people do about music. Although I've never been the best of explaining why I'm interested in something. I can sing somewhat but I don't have the nerve to do it in front of anyone. Never really danced either." Well she had actually when she was little if twirling around the garden could count. She missed the care free days of youth even though many would tell her that she's that old yet.

"Have you been performing for a long time?"

"Yeah, it is," Braelynn replied with a smile. It was nice to chat with someone for a change instead of being holed up in her room composing. She really should interact with other students more often. Well, there was Travis but that was different.

"I'm sure there's something that you have a passion for. Everyone does," Braelynn shrugged nonchalantly. "You just have to discover it." She paused for a while before continuing, "And not everyone talks about music the way I do," she said with a grin. "Don't worry, I'm sure you'll find something that captivates you as much as music captivates me."

"Oh, I wouldn't say it's been a long time. Two months at the most," she replied. "Performing professionally I mean." She let out a chuckle as she remembered singing for her family when she was a mere girl. "I've been singing as long as I can remember."

"I don't know why but I'm recalling the Masquerade the academy once had," Melody said. "I think that was the last time I was somewhere that had people dancing and not a lot of people did. It might have been just two of them." Perhaps I should have worn Ravenclaw colours to it, Melody thought. It could have looked nice.

Melody smiled. "Maybe. I know but some people can talk really beautifully about it. Its nice. Umm... nice wasn't how I meant to put it. But you know some people just have their faces light up when they talk about something and its great seeing that." Well that wasn't exactly poetic, Melody thought.

"Well I think two months is still a pretty big achievement. Congrats."

Braelynn's brows creased. "A Masquerade? I don't think I was around for that but it sounds like so much fun," she replied with a smile, thinking of all the barn dances she attended back home in Derbyshire. She'd attended the almost weekly dances since she was seven, mingling with the other children and enjoying the abundance of food and drinks. Of course, the highlight of any barn dance would be the dance itself and Braelynn always watched in awe as the couples, both teenagers and adults twirled each other around in rhythm to the music. It never failed to mesmerize her.

Braelynn shrugged at the second part of her statement. "Maybe they didn't know how to dance or they were too shy to dance," she suggested, though why would anyone attend a dance if one wasn't going to dance baffled her. Sure there was always socializing but the event was about the dance. Even she had danced at the barn dances back home.

"Yeah. It comes with finding something you're really passionate about," she commented. "And I know what you mean about seeing someone's face light up. My brother absolutely loves math and whenever he talks about it, his eyes light up. It's an amazing thing."

Braelynn smiled bashfully at Melody's congratulations. She wasn't yet used to receiving good feedback and comments and hearing that from someone made her feel rather shy. "Thanks," she replied.

"I think it was to celebrate the opening of the Academy." Melody said. "I still have my outfit." She gave a small smile. "I don't know if I'll ever reuse it. It might not be proper equitte to. But I haven't been to enough balls to know. The mask I could have worked into a Halloween outfit or something."

"Maybe." She wasn't sure how much of the school population had gone. It felt like there was a bunch of people at the time. Certainly there would have been enough partners for everyone.

Melody just nodded. She had spent some time in various muggle schools and hadn't met a lot of people that loved math. Most people seemed to hate it in fact. "Does he like school?" Would he be out of school already? Melody couldn't recall Braelynn mentioning his age.

"You are very welcome." Maybe she would come to Eureka. It would be nice to see how Braelynn sang. Watch her pour her soul into a song.
