Last lesson was simple enough, but Teagan hadn't been happy with it. Not one bit. Sure, they were all getting to know each other, since she was new as well. But she needed to do better. Dorian hadn't said anything to her about the lesson, but she put enough pressure on herself so that he didn't have to. She knew more than some what dangerous work Cursebreaking could be. They needed to be prepared as much as possible.

Moving around the room, she carried a stack of small bowls made of wood. They were a bit rough in makeup, but they didn't need to be anything fancy. About six inches wide at the top, they were rather shallow, enough to hold something well enough. As she moved past each desk, she set one lightly down in the center. The class was rather small last time, so she only set out a handful.

The extras were placed on her own desk in the front. Merlin, I hope this goes better than last time. For some reason, they'd all seemed a bit shy. Understandable, for first years, but they needed to loosen up just a bit. Today would be individual work, but she was considering something for partners or groups next go around. But first, they needed to get their hands dirty.

Grabbing a light grey cardigan off her chair, she pulled it on. The blouse and pencil skirt she normally wore for classes wasn't the warmest, but she prefered it.

Now all I need are students...

Alistair stared at the object on his desk, quite puzzled at that. "umm Ms. Finn... what do you want us to do with.. I dont know how to call these.. liddle bowls.. on all our desks..?" Although the wonder has him completely intrigued; he goes with it.. his sometimes arrogant attitude showed its head for the first time. "is this gauging us, im high on the list for sure.." he has not learned his own professor Ms. Finns attitude, let alone any other professor. Alistair is in for a rude awakening. Alistair sat and waited with a blank stare.

Elspeth entered the classroom, giving the professor a shy greeting as she took a seat. The first lesson had been terrible for her; her mind was flying, making her work quite shoddy. She wanted to do the assigned task again, but the professor had walked right up to her. She didn't want to show Professor Finn her poorly-drawn rune,  but she had to do something. But before she could stutter out something, the professor moved on, probably thinking she was shy or something.

Talk about terrible first impression.

This time, Elspeth was determined to, at the very least, pay attention. She noted the small, shallow bowls atop their desks, and she wondered what they were for. Whatever it was, this lesson was bound to be more interesting than the first.

Lucy was quite content at having to attend her first class in curse-breaking. The subject had always interested her, and going into such a dangerous and adventurous field would be fun, she thought. It beat sitting behind a desk her whole life.

Not only was adventure what she loved, but runes. Runes had always fascinated her. She thought it a rather a cool talent, to decipher things so few could. It gave a certain prestige, in her opinion. So she was eager for class today.

She strode into the classroom, and found an empty seat "Professor," she murmured, taking her seat and looking at the small wooden bowl non the desk.

Greeting the students who entered her room, Teagan's hope for her second lesson was slowly dwindling. The last lesson saw a timidness among the students that had surprised her. Sure, she'd been nervous as a first year herself, but this seemed to be a whole new level. And now, there were only four. The last one approached her with his homework, looking like a scared puppy.

Maybe it's something I said.

She hadn't been exactly inviting, last time. Perhaps a different approach was necessary. Taking the offered paper, she smiled genuinely to the boy. "Thank you, Mr. Trapani." She laid it on the corner of her desk and turned to the rest of the group. "If you could all turn yours in at the end, that would be appreciated."

A flick of her wand and the door closed gently. She aimed her wand at the corner of the room, and a chalkboard moved forward on wheels. "Today we will be focusing on two specific runes from the Elder Futhark family. Laguz and Isa. Can anyone tell me what these runes mean?"

As she spoke, the two words appeared in her own handwriting on the board. Beneath them, the runes appeared as they are generally seen.

While Teagan wasn't the sort of professor to throw a fit over a late student, she was always keenly aware of them. And with a quiet class to begin with, there was no way to miss the outgoing second year as he entered. Acknowledging him with a soft nod, she looked around the room, waiting for an answer.

After a minute of utter silence, it was Daniel who spoke up. He'd given both answers, and while she would have preferred someone else to take a chance, the class did need to continue.

"Correct, Jameson. They are, indeed, connected, though that will not be important for this lesson." With a flick of her wand, a piled of carving knives levitated off her desk and moved slowly out to the class, one per student. They were still sheathed, but she hadn't wanted anyone playing around with them before they got started.

"Today we'll be working on putting these runes into practice. A lot of what Cursebreakers do is...well, break curses. But sometimes the best way to beat something, is to play by its rules. When dealing with runes, this practice holds true." She reached over to her desk and picked up her own bowl.

"I've taken the liberty of working this bowl through the steps you will follow." She held it up so that they could all see the inside of it. Carved into the wood was a symbol different than the others. "I've a rune for fire, to give you a different example. But as you can guess, you're going to be working with the two from the board. After you etch them in, you will then infuse the carving with magic. Without the touch of magic, the rune is useless."

Pointing her wand into the bowl, she spoke clearly, "Solwilo." A bright light flashed from inside the bowl, its rays moving upwards towards the ceiling. "To infuse the rune, you will speak the name of it. But just that won't make it work. You must picture your goal. Understand what it is you are seeking. Last class, we talked about the fact that runes may have more than one meaning. You need to understand all aspects of a rune to truly hone it's power."

She released the spell, the light vanishing, and set the bowl back down. "Take your time with the carving, as this will impact the effectiveness of your work. The more prestine the rune, the more powerful the spell."

With everything laid out for them, she was eager to see what they'd do.

(OOC: please be realistic in your work for this lesson. As it is the first time they are doing this (save for one second year), they will not be making masterpieces. Take the opportunity for character development, as it is provided. Have fun!)

Teagan watched the small group expectantly, eager to see what they would do with the lesson. Her focus what disturbed however, when she heard people moving around in the halls. Looking down at her watch, her eyebrows rose in surprise. Already? Her hope for a more productive lesson this time round was dashed, as not one student had really gotten to work on their carving.

Pursing her lips to try to hide her disappointment, she addressed the class. "Sorry, but it looks like we're out of time. If you wish, you may take the bowl with you, to work on the carving on your own time." With a flick of her wand, the door opened, flooding the room with noise from outside.
