| Apprehensive. That was, in a word, what Codey was. Dorian was busy with some duties outside of the University, and with him newly elected as Deputy Headmaster, it fell to him to oversee the start of the year ball. The theme had been, at the very least, already decided - ever since the success of the masquerade one they held during the nine-hundredth-and-fiftieth anniversary, it had been determined that it would continue as a tradition. But that did not mean Codey wasn't worried. It was one thing to work with dragons, another to teach a bunch of young adults on the art of dealing with said dragons, but it was a whole other level being asked to host a ball. First impressions were everything, Codey knew, and while he was good at presenting himself as the perfect man, it was another story to do the same for an entire facility. It was one of the reasons he declined being heir in the first place; parties and balls and social events were fine, but organising them was never something he enjoyed. The perks of being a Pureblood without the stress of being one was why the man never took on responsibilities. Until now. But as he began his last round of checking before the doors were opened to the public, he couldn't help but smile. The house elves had done a wonderful job of replicating the decorations they had that very first ball he attended. The stairway had been decorated to perfection, and he walked slowly down them, eyes on the lookout for anything out of place. It was perfect, and he nodded in approval. He hadn't asked to be Deputy Headmaster, but when they offered it to him and asked, they had phrased it in a way that he couldn't refuse. So there he was, new in his position, and already starting to wonder if he had made a mistake. Only time would tell, though, and as he entered the main hall, his smile widened a little. Maybe it wouldn't be too hard. "Perfect," he commented to a passing house elf. "Well done." The elf bowed, and continued on his way. Checking his watch, he noted the time. Ten minutes, and then the doors would be open and everyone would come in. As long as things stayed this way - perfect - he would be happy. Already dressed in his suit, all that was left washis mask which he would slip on just before people started entering. |

| - Rose's Ball Attire:
With a flick of her wand, Rose spelled the last few stray hairs into place. Just because she wasn't performing anymore, that didn't mean she would allow herself to appear sloppy and hastily put together. Not in front of colleagues and future students. Her hair in a rather simple updo, she settled the intricate mask onto her face. With simple makeup to compliment, the mask completed her look well. The walk down to the Great Hall was easy enough, as the witch had gone for a lower heel than some. She'd spent plenty enough time on her toes in the past, she never saw the need to do so now. As she neared the Entrance, she noticed the rather empty staircases. There were a few people here and there, but not many, nor anyone she recognized. A bit of her anxiety calmed, knowing she'd be able to get her barrings before the crowd arrived. As she finally entered the Hall, a small smile graced her features. Maybe this won't be so bad. The decorators had done a wonderful job, as always. She'd forgotten what a bit of magic could do for an event. She noted a man standing near, one that had an air of authority. Most likely a fellow professor. She made her way over to him. "Good evening. Are you the one to thank for the wonderful arrangements?" |

| Jezika touched up her eyes then leaned back and examined herself in the mirror. The real her had no patience for masquerade balls and instead wanted to curl up on the sofa, drink beer and eat ice cream. But since she was a new professor, she thought it in her best interest to rub a few shoulders and observe her students a little. So she'd forced herself into going to the dance.
Her partner would have laughed his balls off if he learned she went to a masquerade dance and teased her endlessly that she had to wear a dress completely not her style. One more reason to make her miss being part of her team. The thought made her eyes rove to the letter lying on her coffee table. Although her team was forbidden to communicate with her - lest the mole learned of her whereabouts - she and her partner had developed a special code system so that none but they could open the letters they sent to each other. The latest letter held disappointing news. They had nothing which could lead them closer to discovering the identity of the mole. She sighed then returned her attention to the mirror.
She brushed out her naturally wavy hair and decided to keep it down. She stuck diamond stud earrings to her lobes and slipped on a silver bracelet and matching necklace to accessorize. Finally, she donned her mask. Nodding once at her reflection, she put her feet in black peep-toe pumps, grabbed her clutch and apparated to the academy, arriving just outside the great hall.
Jezika took a deep breath, put a smile on her face and entered. She was amazed at the splendor of the room. The house elves had done an amazing job. Not many people had arrived and so Jezika made herself busy by taking a slow walk around the room. It was the Auror in her to make sure she knew every part of the room she was in, a habit she would carry with her as long as she lived and one that saved her and her team's life many times. She caught sight of two other professors and made her way to them. She positioned herself close but not so much that she would interrupt them and waited for more people to arrive. |

| - Aurelia's Outfit:
Looking at herself in the mirror, Aurelia couldn't help but laugh a little. Her mom would drop dead if she could see her now. With hair as short as hers, there wasn't much to be done with it, especially with the mask taking center focus on her face. So, she left it simple, and went with basic makeup as well. Not that she had a date to impress anyhow. Besides that, she'd found a rather acceptable dress at a shop in Avalon Village. Normally, it would have cost a bit more, but as usual with events like this, Aurelia had waited til the last minute to plan for it. Even though dresses usually weren't her thing, she found the top rather interesting. And the chance to wear a mask just seemed too good to pass up. She'd heard from some upperclassmen last year that they'd had another masque ball the year before she'd started, and she was excited to see what it'd be like. Taking a seat on her dorm room bed, she slipped on her shoes with a smirk. Sure, she had to put on the dress. But it was long enough for her to get away with her signature converse. She'd put them through some thorough cleaning spells, so they didn't deter from the outfit too much. Maybe if she lived in the castle, like back at Salem, she would consider heels...Hell, who was she kidding. Someone would have to practically Crucio her to get those torture devices on her feet. Seeing as how her roomie and the other girls in Dorm 3 had made their way to the ball (or weren't going at all), she made the trek alone. She expected to see more students or staff walking up to the entrance, but maybe she'd gotten the time wrong. Not too unusual. As she made her way through the Entrance Hall, she couldn't help but smile at the decorations. Catching sight of the few people there, she waved at them. Professor Ellingston was obvious, standing with the two women, Professors probably. Seeing as how she didn't really know anyone, she made her way to the buffet table to see what they had |

| "A ball?" Andrew asked Tori with a quirked brow, his little sister shrugged and grinned. "You wish for me to attend a ball?" He asked again incredulously. His parents had been gracious, since Viktoria had been on her best behavior lately, they granted her permission to use the Portkey to his apartment. That meant she was spending the weekend with him. "And where would I even find a 'ball' to attend?"
"Merlin's Academy is hosting a ball tonight," she said with a shrug, she tossed a piece of paper at him. "Wear that tan tux you were supposed to wear to Rickard and Arikya's wedding," she demanded. He gave her a look of disbelief.
"What you want me out so you can throw some party at my apartment that'll torture my poor House Elf?" He asked accusatorially with blue eyes narrowed sharply into slits. She groaned and buried her face into one of his throw pillows.
"No! You're just so boring, you've not a girlfriend or boyfriend or any interesting partner and my love life is dead because of all those idiots at my school, and I live vicariously through you. Which I can't do when your love is as dead as mine." She got up then, grabbed his shoulders, looked him dead in the eyes with a plea in her eyes.
"Have a love life so that I won't need to." She was practically begging. He chuckled and ruffled the top of her brunette hair.
"Fine," he said, "but if I get home and there's a single pillow out of place, you my dearie will be in a world of trouble, understood?"
"Yes! Just live a life already, gah." She exclaimed and buried herself into the pillows. Andrew laughed and proceeded to get ready. After an half-hour of dressing and freshening up, added in time to casually cast a non-stick gel charm through his hair (call him shallow, most people were) he came back to the living room to see Viktoria passed out on the couch. He grinned and told his house elf to take care of her before apparating off.
When he arrived in the Great Hall it was clear that he was not fashionably late. In fact despite the crowd, it was not the most active place. He checked the time, and wondered what time it was actually supposed to start before realizing he had no clue! Tori had given him all the details; she probably looked through his mail, saw the invitation and threw it at him. It was true despite his two run-in's with some very pretty females, there was no story there he was willing to share. Therefore Viktoria didn't know anything about his love-life, which was just how it was supposed to be. He gave a small irate sigh and hoped that something interesting would happened so he could report it back to Tori.
A loud growl came from his mid-region as he realized he hadn't eaten since breakfast. He glanced around the Great Hall and noticed the buffet table. He licked his lips and immediately made his way over. He was about to reach for a plate when he noticed the other person there; a small, fiery-haired woman dressed to the tens in a floor-length, blue (it was probably more like sapphire, but really how was Andrew to care?) dress.
"Good evening," he said with a grin and a slight bow. "May I accompany you in this feast of delicious free food?" He jested with a small grin. - Andrew's Outfit:

| Melody looked herself over in the mirror. She had magically grown her hair out to shoulder length and then used a charm and a twirl of her wand to make the front strands curl. Leaving the curled strands be, she made the rest of her hair into a bun on the top of her head. Melody put on bright red lipstick and slipped her mask on.
The mask was a blue one with just a swirl of silver in the corner. Melody had considered adding an eagle onto the mask, a very small one. But the idea had made her feel silly so she left it. Her dress was a floor length dark blue one with puffy shoulder sleeves that no one would be able to see that she wasn't wearing heels in. She had left the heels behind for some comfortable blue slippers as high heels just weren't for her. She did miss the added height but she had never mastered walking in heels.
There were some light blue swirls on the top and bottom on her dress and the smallest swirls would move when the lights hit them, a small enchantment that hadn't taken long to do. The top and bottom part of the dress were seperated by a thin emboridary of golden leaves. The bottom part of the dress was a less dark shade of blue than the top. Melody twirled around in front of a full length mirror, decided that she looked presentable and left for the ball.
She realized that there weren't too many people yet. She had meant to go later when no one would notice her enter but at least the buffet table wasn't crowded yet. Melody made her way towards the food.
"Excuse me," she said as she reached over a man to grab a small cake. His outfit struck her as a bit out of place from what she had seen from ball tuxes in her limited experience.

| - Amerix's outfit:
Amerix stared out her room window, watching the setting sun, devoid of any emotion whatsoever. She could hear titters and giggles coming from the room beside her, a byproduct of her dorm mates getting ready for the ball. Not for the first time was she glad that she had a room to herself. Her gaze automatically slid to her small wardrobe where she knew her own dress hung. She didn't want to go to the ball. But then, mama spent so much money on that dress. She wouldn't want it to go to waste. When Amerix returned to Switzerland for the summer holidays, her vow to not say a word about the ball to her parents - knowing they would want to buy her a dress and accessories - flew out the window when they questioned her about the academy's activities. She couldn't lie. It was followed by a week of dress hunting until Mama and Haley found the 'perfect' dress. Amerix had protested at the outrageous cost of a piece of material but Mama had waved her concern away. She'd managed to convince her to pay half the amount with the money she earned from the ice cream parlour though.
Amerix sighed, curled up into a ball on her bed and closed her eyes, hearing footsteps and laughter pass by her room as the other girls made their way out of the two-bedroom dorm. She heard the door close and knew that she had the whole place to herself. When she opened her eyes, they landed on the navy blue velvet rectangle box resting on her desk. She sat up and stared at it as if it would come to life and eat her up. With shaky hands, she reached out and took it. She opened the lid revealing a sparkling thin silver necklace - a family heirloom her mother insisted she wear to the ball. Her fingers traced the minute diamonds. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes and she blinked rapidly to keep them at bay. Mama would want her to go to the ball. Papa would insist she go.
Very slowly, she put on the dress, glad that it wasn't sparkly or shiny. The dull colour suited her mood very well. It was however a little too large for her since she'd been steadily looking weight since that horrific night. With a flick of her wand, she sized the dress. She put on the necklace and mask, not bothering to look at herself in the mirror. She ran a brush through her hair and decided to skip the makeup. She fastened the black strappy heels and as she stood up, her gaze landed on the bottle of sleeping pills and she stared longingly at it for a moment. Her nightly dose would have to wait until the ball was over. She sighed then apparated.
The Great Hall had been done up very nicely though Amerix's eyes didn't register the opulence as she made her way through. She spotted the refreshment table and though she shrunk from having to make contact with the other students, she desperately needed alcohol if she was to last through the night. She paused long enough to force a smile of greeting before turning searching eyes to the table. |

| - Braelynn's outfit:
Braelynn applied a coat of lips gloss and rubbed her lips together, looking at her reflection in the mirror. She'd gone for neutral makeup, the only really defining thing being the eyeliner and mascara. She stood back and surveyed herself. "Not bad at all," she commented, making one twirl, her skirt fanning out. She grinned. It had taken her ages to find the right dress and she'd tried on countless dresses. Some were the perfect colour but too fluffy and some were the perfect fluff but a colour that didn't suit her. Just as she was about to give up hope, she'd landed on this dress and fell in love. Now, she just had to hope that Travis liked it too.
She fixed on silver earrings, necklace and bracelet and decided to leave her long wavy hair down, accessorizing with only a small butterfly clip to keep her fringe from getting in her eyes. Very carefully, she slipped the mask on. "How do I look?" she asked, turning to Harmony.
The bird cocked her head and appeared to look thoughtful. Braelynn held back a chuckle.
"Good! Not good! Good!" the bird squawked. "Water!"
Braelynn sighed, knowing that the parrot mimicked the words without really understanding them but she checked the water and food containers just to make sure. Putting on a stern face, she lifted one finger and wagged it in front of the bird. "Now you be a good girl and don't get up to any mischief." The bird just squawked and Braelynn rolled her eyes. Just then there was a knock on the door.
She left her bedroom, crossed the common room and opened the door to find Travis standing on the other side, looking devastatingly handsome. "Travis! Hi!" she greeted. "You look rather handsome, I must say." She grabbed her clutch and keys then allowed Travis to take a hold of her hand an apparate them to the Great Hall. When they arrived, she had to take a moment to awe at the decorations. "Wow, the house elves did a splendid job!" she commented, slipping her hand into the elbow Travis offered her.
She allowed herself to be led into the room and towards the table where she spotted a group of students gathered. Ever the gentleman, Travis took a plate for her and she thanked him before selecting some delicious looking tarts. She smiled and nodded at the people already there. This was going to be a fun night. |

Arthur smoothed out the lapels of his tux, not that they really needed smoothing. He had just felt like doing it.
He looked himself over in the mirror and smiled. The new purple tux looked great. He wore a black shirt underneath his tux's jacket and had a black bowtie. His mask was a thick gold one that covered the top half of his face.
When he entered the Great Hall he moved looked around. Not many were there yet, maybe he was earlier than he thought he would be. He made his way to the banquet table thinking that he might as well get some food before the table became too crowded.

| Ball really wasn't her thing that much but she decided to show up still. She wasn't even sure what to wear there so she had to do a little bit of shopping before it. She did bought herself a blue dress. She just liked it for some reasons.
When they finally came she left her hair at is, bit of curly and loose. She didn't really even put on lots of make up for sure. She didn't really see a point. Just mascara and lip gloss and that's all she needed. She was also wearing a blue mask, what did go well with her dress.
When she walked into the great hall she saw there already a few people. She really wasn't sure what to do her now. It was hard to tell who is who by just looking at them. Getting something to eat before it was crowded was good idea but Aqua wasn't hungry so she didn't really want to eat or drink anything right now. So she just looked around there and leaned against the wall next to the great hall doors. |

| Ceyal glanced out his room window and noted the setting sun and the rising moon. The dorm was deathly silent, with no living being but he and his dog inhabiting the place. It wasn't a far fetched guess that the guys he shared the dorm with were at the ball. He'd decided rather early on that he wasn't going to attend the function. A bunch of well dressed people socialising, dancing, laughing and talking the whole night? He'd rather slam his tongue in a car door. Which was why he was lying on his bed, music blasting through his headphones and Yophi lying by his side.
His gaze strayed to his closet in which his clothes - what little he had of them - were in a messy heap. He couldn't be bothered about them though. It was the suit hanging from the closet doorknob that made him pause for a second. He'd visited his adoptive parents the previous week just so they would stop worrying about him and pestering him throughout the school year. He appreciated their concern and care and especially the fact that they took him in when he was stranded but try as he might, he'd only managed to cultivate a polite respect for them with the subtlest hint of affection. They knew and respected that but it didn't stop them from caring any less. Which was how he ended up with the suit - his only suit. He'd resisted as hard and as much as he could without hurting their feelings but in the end, Mrs. Abbott managed to get him to agree.
You know, they're expecting you to wear that suit and go to the ball.
They wouldn't know if I didn't go.
They'd certainly ask about it and would you lie to them? They'd been overjoyed to get you that suit.
I never wanted it in the first place.
That doesn't change the fact that they spent their money on you, not only on the suit but on raising you and you know they don't work or have an income besides the monthly support their children give them which isn't much at all.
Yophi whined and gave his cheek a tentative lick as if sensing his inner turmoil. He absently stroked her soft fur and let out a sigh. Looks like he'd end up going, if not for the whole thing then at least for a few hours just to please his adoptive parents. He got up from the bed, put away his headphones and changed into the all black suit. Taking a look at himself in the mirror, he decided it was too posh for him. He removed the black tie and suit jacket and shrugged on his black leather jacket over the black long-sleeved shirt, not bothering to button it. He ran a hand through his chin length hair, deciding against using a comb.
You know, mum would be so proud of you right now. She'd be hugging you and crying and saying what a handsome man you are.
Ceyal sighed as he put on his black sports shoes, refusing the dress shoes the sat under his bed. He could only go so far. After giving Yophi a rub goodbye, he took out his wand and apparated to the great hall. His eyes took in the people already there, especially the crowd around the food table. He automatically turned his back to them and leaned against the wall, content to be an observer. |
