Shani is the only child of Sadiki Makara, a muggle lawyer for a large commercial firm in London, and Elise, an entreprenurial witch who currently owns and runs a multi-million dollar Jewellery company, which specialises in high-quality bespoke and enchanted pieces. She grew up in the affluent inner-city areas of London and has known nothing but the high life.

Her family was a tightly-knit trio; while her parents were both incredibly hard-working people with busy social lives, Shani found her childhood filled with plenty of quality time with them. Their spacious flat was often filled with music and the sound of the TV, or laughter and giggles from Exploding Snap night. She might have been an only child, but she had more cousins than she could count, and family has always been a massive part of her life. Her father, a South-African immigrant, taught her to speak Afrikaans, and later she learnt French, Japanese and Mandarin as well. Her mother had thought it important that Shani learn a number of languages as her company began to expand its borders.

Actually, much of Shani's education and socialisation had been grooming her to inherit her mother's company. She was an expert in differentiating fake and real gems by the time she was 5 years old, knew the ins-and-outs of goldsmithing before she was ten and when she finally reached Hogwarts at age 11, she was doodling jewellery designs on spare scraps of parchment. She would often follow her mother to the show room floor and oggle the glittery pieces on the soft, red cushions behind the spotless glass. Shani would watch as Elise effortlessly spoke to clients, designing not just the look of the jewellery but the magical properties they wanted it to possess, right there and then. Other children might find being an heir too much pressure to cope with, but it has given Shani purpose and drive and, secretly, a sense of self-importance.

Shani enjoys nothing more than using her brain, stretching it to make the impossible, possible. She does so much thinking that it comes naturally to her and has unsurprisingly given her the gift of unrelenting sass. She deals with unlikeable people with snide and clever comments, or pulling faces not even the greatest comedian could replicate. Shade-throwing? Her specialty. And if you need someone to stir the pot, look no further - she always knows exactly which buttons to push. At school, she luckily inherited her mother's talent for Charms and her style of magic is quite neat and elegant.

When she received her letter from Merlin's Academy, she knew she wanted to study - but didn't know what she wanted to do. She tossed up between Potioneering and Auror Training, before deciding she wanted to try something more in her father's line of work. She can't say it's really been working for her, but hey - at least she's got some kick ass toning going on.
