| Amerix needed to study. Plain and simple. It wasn't that she was falling behind in her classes or being completely blur in when the professor talked about something. No, this was for her. As strange as it sounded, studying was one of her ways to relax besides reading or exercising. It helped her focus and perhaps it was because it helped her feel in control of her life. She knew all too well the feeling of everything going out of hand in a frenzy of chaotic emotions and thoughts that left her drowning. Studying was a way to control that. It assured her that at least something was in order.
So, with a bag of books, chips, water and stationery, she headed to the study hall, intent of clocking in at least two hours of studying. She knew it would leave her feeling satisfied, content and exuberant once she was done. Her only worry was that it would tire her too much. She still had to work at the ice cream parlour but thank Merlin that since it was winter, there weren't too many customers. That would give her more time to focus on her school work. She would even study in between serving customers. Amerix doubted that would happen in the summer though. Then she really would have to plan out her schedule and juggle work and studies.
Picking a corner in the study hall, she settled down, opening her textbooks, workbook and bag of chips. Plugging in her earphones, she played her favourite playlist on her iPod and determinedly started studying. She would be focusing on potions for this study session since it was one of her weaker subjects and she could not afford to fail the mandatory class. |

| Devin was in a complete and utter rut. His latest letter from his parents had not been a welcomed one. It had been a few days since their last communication, so he wasn't thinking of much when the owl arrived outside his window that morning - until he opened it. Starting with words that almost made him roll his eyes (Dearest son; they never called him that) it continued on to ask him how he was and if he was finding everything 'to his satisfaction'. That at once aroused his suspicions, and the next paragraph proved his instinct right.
It has come to our attention that you have been wasting time playing Quidditch. While we understand that it is necessary for you to take breaks from your studies, we are afraid that it is consuming too much of your time, the words continued in familiar handwriting - that of their butler's - and went on to 'express the concerns' his parents felt. Then (and this was the worst part) they suggested that he instead find someone to tutor, or help, so that his spare time wouldn't go to waste. He could, of course, still play his game, but much less of it.
Devon was not one to disobey his parents, and only Merlin knew how they found out about his secret games - he hated to think it was one of his mates, but if it was, they would soon regret it - and so he made his way down to the study room to source around for possible target. Sighing softly to himself, he looked around the hall, eyes sharp and trained from his hours of locating the golden Snitch, until they landed on a younger witch. She was sat in the far corner, which was a good sign because it meant she was not really one to make much conversation with people when studying (or at least, he hoped so), and the concentrated look on her face coupled with the potions book made him do a double take.
And when someone made him do that, they were definitely worth a second thought, too. As such, Devin quietly watched for her for a few moments, before smiling a little to himself. She didn't seem too bad a person, and he quickly and briefly walked over to her. Not sitting just yet - it was very rude to barge in on someone - he bent forward to catch her eye and then waited till she was actually paying him attention before curtly saying, "My name's Devin. I'm a Potioneer-in-training, second year. Do you need help with the subject?" He kept it as brief as possible, including everything the witch needed to know in three short sentences. It was how he usually spoke, and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it. |

| There was nothing like studying to music, especially catchy and melodious music. For some people, it might be distracting, trying to read paragraphs of information about potions with lyrics running through the brain but for Amerix, it helped her focus. It kept boredom from settling in. But, the only setback was it enticed her to sing along with the music and she wouldn't ever do that in public. She'd done it once before when she thought no one was around and got caught by a guy. It was so humiliating that she knew she'd never do it again. So, she settled for spinning her pen around and around when she wasn't using it to take down notes.
Everything had been going well putting her in a good mood when she sensed that someone was beside her. Looking up, she saw a wizard. He wasn't all that bad looking but she wouldn't call him the handsomest man she'd seen either. Pulling out her earphones so she could listen to him better (and to be more polite), she took in his introduction. Wow. Straight to the point she thought to herself. While she didn't mind it, too much of it could seem abrupt, rude even. Well, who was she to judge? At least now she had a variety of friends and acquaintances. One who, to her, babbled like a never ending stream, one who spoke when necessary and now, one who cut straight to the matter. It would take some getting used to but it would be a good experience for her to know a different people.
He'd offered to help her with potions. Should she take him up? She didn't quite know him yet and her greatest fear was that it would become awkward. So the next question was did she need help. During the make-up potions class, she didn't think she needed it but then things just seemed to get harder. Of course it would, you stupid girl! Perhaps it wouldn't hurt to have a little extra help. And he was a potions major so that was something too. It was better than studying be herself and it might motivate or inspire her.
Responding with a small smile she replied, "Hi. I'm Amerix, Auror-in-training, first year. And yes, some help would be good. Here, take a seat." She moved some of her things around on the table to give him some space. Dear Merlin, let there not be any awkward conversations, pauses and whatnot was her thought as she waited for him to settle down. |

| The witch was not one to speak before thinking, that much Devin could already tell by the way she kept silent. There was a concentrated look in her eyes that told him she had heard what he said, but was taking time to process it, and already was patting himself on the back for a good choice. It seemed that at least one person in the school knew how to respect others - or two, rather, considering the man he met the other day at the Quidditch shop.
Giving her all the time she needed, he waited patiently, smiling softly without realizing it. Devin loved meeting people who were respectful and polite, and it showed with the way he relaxed his body. A few moments later, she began to speak and he listened intently, the smile widening at the words she used. Suppressing a chuckle - for she had copied his manner of introduction - he thanked her softly and sat down at the chair she indicated.
So, she was an Auror-in-training. From what he knew, there were a few from that course that had problems with the subject he found to be easy - but then again, most everything did, as long as he actually concentrated. Then again, those who pursued that particular course (the Auror one, not Potioneer) were usually the type to rush into things and run head first into burning buildings and whatnot, so it sort of made sense that Potions, which required patience and precision measurements, would be hard for them.
Trying to figure her out, he looked her over surreptitiously, so that it didn't seem as though he was taking her in. Quiet, like him, she seemed to truly enjoy studying, judging from the way she didn't look overly stressed - besides, no first year actually spent their free time revising unless they were either forced, or liked it. He remembered a time when he was like that, until his parents stepped in and ruined it all. Now the only thing he truly enjoyed was Quidditch, and he couldn't even do that.
Reminding himself not to take it out on the witch in front of him - which he would have a few years ago until he realized he did this sort of thing - Devin took a few breaths to calm him anger. "What do you not understand?" he asked, motioning to the books. |

| Amerix wasn't one to judge harshly on first impressions. Sure, her opinion was affected the first time she met a person but she always tried not to let it be set in stone. She knew first hand what it felt like to be judged unfairly and consciously made an effort not to do the same to others. True, it didn't always work out and some people stayed true to the first impression they gave but Amerix liked to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. It was how she hoped someone would treat her during her time at Beauxbatons. Amerix brushed off that thought. It was over now. And she was stronger, better because of it. Who cared if the whole school had harboured false facts about her? She'd come out of it alive and she was proud of it.
But back to first impressions, Amerix thought that Devin was nice enough. Perhaps a little too abrupt for her liking but she supposed he was alright. That was before she felt goosebumps rise up her neck. She knew that feeling alright. Knew it too well and hated it. She'd received it almost everyday at Beauxbatons, knew that it meant people were talking about her behind her back, sizing her up, passing out judgments that were way out of proportion and completely utterly...utterly...there was no word for how exaggerated it was. She knew, even if she didn't look up that Devin was looking at her. Perhaps it wasn't as intense as the stares-behind-the-back she'd received for years but it still gave her the same feeling. Her opinion of him changed then and her guard went up.
Don't tense up, Amerix. If you do, he'll sense it. Keep cool. You're used to this kind of thing. Just be cool she lectured herself taking a deep breath.
She flipped the pages of her Potions textbook trying to find that one topic she'd found difficulty in understanding. She wasn't really sure that she wanted his help now, being on edge with him, but she'd drawn a blank on how to refuse him. After all, she had accepted his offer and she couldn't very well just ask him to leave. Perhaps make it as quick as possible? Pretend to understand? That would make her a liar. Then again, she could've been wrong about him. Congratulations, Amerix. You've gotten yourself into a really fine situation.
"Here," she replied to his question, indicating the topic that she couldn't for the life of her understand. "I'm having trouble figuring this out." She got out her pencil ready to make some notes. |
