Declan was born and raised in Ireland by Kelan and Edna O’Connor. Kelan was a well-known con artist and Declan inherited many of his unfavorable traits, one of them being his inability to tell the truth. Due to Kelan’s occupation, the O’Connor’s never stayed in the same town for long. Because of the frequency in travelling, Declan was homeschooled by his mother. When Declan was eight years old, his sister Bridget was born. Once Declan looked into his sister’s eyes for the first time, he knew that he would do everything in his power to protect her.

Declan’s magic revealed itself early on in his life, and he kept it a secret from his parents in fear of his father using it in his cons. Declan would often entertain Bridget when she was younger with his magic, creating puppet-like shows with her dolls. When he received his letter from Hogwarts, his parents were shocked. He explained his magic to his parents, but his father didn’t believe him. Kelan claimed that his son was simply attempting to perform a con on them. Declan attended Hogwarts anyway, despite the objection of his father. During his first year, he received a letter from his parents stating that he was no longer welcome in their lives. The letter was signed by both his parents, yet Edna still sent him the occasional letter and when Bridget turned eighteen she sent him a letter saying that she had left home and moved in with a boyfriend that she left nameless. When Bridget was twenty she sent Declan another letter announcing the birth of her daughter, Caitlin, who bore Bridget’s maiden name. Bridget never mentioned the name of Caitlin’s father.

Declan graduated Hogwarts with high marks in all of his potions classes. He felt at home whenever he was near a cauldron. He then proceeded to attend Merlin’s Academy for Excellence and majored in Potions. Declan graduated as one of the top of his class. After the academy, Declan travelled, finding work were he could. He ventured to a small town in northern England where he met a witch named Anna Beck. The two fell madly in love, and anyone that saw the two of them together noted how perfect they were together. Anna was the only woman that Declan was completely honest with. They married when Declan was 33 and Anna was 31. Declan found a job at Merlin’s Academy as a potions professor, and the two settled in a nearby town.

However, as Declan always believed, there was no such thing as a happy ending. After five years of marriage, Anna fell ill. They went through many doctors and healers, but none of them could offer the couple any good news. Anna was dying, and dying fast. Declan took a leave of absence from work and took care of his ailing wife. Anna passed a year later.

Declan lost himself to alcohol for a few years. He reached out to his sister and she helped take care of him the best she could. After a handful of arguments, Declan agreed to attend AA meetings and return to his job. The academy reluctantly accepted him, but did so due to his connections within the academy. He is still living with Bridget and Caitlin while he gets back on his feet. But, as Bridget keeps reminding him, he needs to move out as soon as he’s ready.
