Right. Okay. Not so bad. Wendyll moved to the center of the classroom, surveying the changes he'd made. The room had been quite bare when he'd arrived a week ago. Whether that was from preferences the past professor had, or preparation for the new one, he didn't know. It didn't really matter, in the long run, and he went with it. Adjusting his black framed glasses, he checked off his mental list.

Desks and chairs for everyone? Check. He'd decided to start all the years together, just to make his life easier. Teaching had been a...swift shift from his last job, and he was still getting his feet wet with the idea.

Books? Well, they'd been given a list of required materials when they'd applied for their lessons. Nothing he really needed to worry about. There were extra's of course, but they were worn and probably outdated. Left, no doubt, but students who never ended up reaching the end of their academic career. He remembered well how the lesser determined students seemed to drop like flies. It could be...tough, seeing what could happen in the real world.

Shadows seemed to pass behind his eyes, but Wendyll shook his head, driving them away. Walking around to the front of his room, he flicked his wand towards the windows, opening them to the late summer air. At least they would be comfortable, he figured.

Alcyone blinked a little in surprise when she stepped into the classroom and came to two swift conclusions - one, the professor had changed, because the room looked different to how the old one had kept it. Two, she was the first one there. A pleased smile sprawled over her features as her eyes shifted to land on the new professor - ah, professor Carter, wasn't he? With her chin tilted up and her frame set in a very formal manner that had been schooled from her birth even if her parents had not played a part in her learning to be a proper pureblood, she strode over to one of the seats up the front and sat herself down.

Spell damage was something that she'd fond herself interested in over the past few years of her learning as a healer, because there was something so awful about the certain scenarios that came to play. An accidental spell shot from a wand, someone attacking their spouse without meaning to, believing them to be an enemy of some kind, or someone particularly powerful losing control on their magic and hurting those they cared about. It was awful. She wanted to be the one to help people not lose anyone over a mistake.

Today was her first healing lesson, and Tess smiled at the thought of seeing if this was the major for her. It was a stressful enough having to get the books, but to sell the major to her parents had been her biggest struggle. Potions ran in her blood, every offspring from the Holmes family line thrived and succeeded in potions. The fact that she'd gone into a subject that involved serving other people was seen as demeaning in her family. Especially if she wasn't going to get married and serve a husband. Sighing at the thought, she pushed the door open.

This class would probably determine how the whole experience will be in the rest of her major. Perhaps putting lots of pressure on one class seemed stupid, but for her it was very much the situation. Looking into the class, she realized that the man that had helped her buying clothes was actually her professor. Smiling softly, she sat down and took out her quill.

Having had looked over the list of subjects available for the different courses, Brooke had particularly found interest in the Spell Damage topic under healing. Figuring it would be a very useful tool for her to have out in the field if - when - she became an Auror, she decided that it wouldn't cause any harm for her to attend. After all, if anything happened out there, she would definitely need to know some more complex healing spells - her mother had already taught her a few of the bare basics.

Entering class, she looked around, surprised to only see two other students there. Walking up to the front - there was no other place Brooke liked to sit more - she chose a place next to a familiar, but not directly next to, not wanting to invade any private spaces considering how empty the room was. "Morning, Professor," she greeted, removing her writing things and placing them in front of her.

Turning to the person next to her, she offered her a smile. "Hey! Alcy, right?"

Parker felt his heartbeat quicken in nervous anticipation for what was to come in his first healing lesson. As excited as he’d been for potions, it was familiar subject. Spell damage, he assumed, would be fairly new as it was only glossed over in his Defense classes over the years.

He left the dorms pretty early, not wanting to get lost and be late like he’d been for potions. Making his way through to the main building, he began to look through some sections of the textbook to get an idea of what to expect. It was a heavily used, older edition of what they were supposed to have, but he figured it would work just as well. Maybe once he started working he could save up to buy better books in the years to come. But this term, if worst came to worse, he could always study with someone using their book.

He closed the book and adjusted his bag on his shoulder as he made his way upstairs to the second floor, taking his time to walk through the hallways he’d not seen yet. Nearing the hospital wing, Parker smiled to himself. Fond memories of being allowed to assist Madame Keil with small tasks in his last year at Hogwarts, experiences that made him more sure than ever that he wanted to go into healing.

Despite taking his time to get to the classroom, Parker was among the first few to arrive. He took a seat near the front of the room, not really looking around to see if he knew who the others were. His mind instead wandering off about other things.

Caught up in her own thoughts, she didn't notice a presence slide into place beside where she was sat - though, that wasn't surprising. Alcyone often became caught up in her own thoughts and didn't focus on anything going on around her unless it was necessary. She would've made an awful auror, but she'd fortunately chosen not to follow such a path in life - she'd leave all the mad people-saving to her brother, thank you very much. Being as distracted as she was meant that she jumped a little in surprise when a voice interrupted her thoughts.

Her head snapped to the side and she relaxed immediately when those fiery locks snagged her attention, a smile settling comfortably onto her features. "Oh! Yes, Alcy, or Alcyone, or whatever you'd like to call me, I'm not fussy," she replied with a breathy laugh, pushing a stray piece of hair back into place amongst the rest of her locks. "And you're Brooke, right?" She asked, even though she knew that it was Brooke. Alcyone might be distracted at times, but if she wasn't the type to soak up information like a sponge then may a flying pig hit her.

The mental image was slightly alarming, and wholly amusing.

Murphy raced through the hallways of the second floor hospital wing. She was running late, something that rarely ever happened, but whenever it did, her whole day was a mess. Murphy’s Law, eh? she thought to herself as she came up to the classroom. She slowed her stride and pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket.

With a triple check of her schedule that she had scribbled down and a deep breath to calm her heartbeat, she entered the room. Not to her surprise, a few students and the professor were already there. She took the seat that was closest to the door and tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear.

Murph wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from this class. Of course, she knew what to expect when it came to the material that would be covered in the course, but she wondered what to expect of her classmates. She wondered how they expected her to act. Murphy pulled out her textbook from her satchel and gingerly laid it on her desk, careful to make as little noise as possible.

A few of the girls in the front of the class talked to each other. She caught a few names being exchanged and then ducked her head down, focusing intently on the cover of her textbook.

Spell Damage: Introduction (All Years) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Spell Damage: Introduction (All Years)   Spell Damage: Introduction (All Years) EmptyMon Dec 15, 2014 12:42 am

For every student that entered the classroom, Wendyll's anxiety ratcheted up another notch. It wasn't that he disliked people - he was a healer, after all. He was just used to them being in some state or another that left them needing his help. There was usually some puzzle to solve, some threat to treat. Regular people...well, that wasn't his forte.

Greeting each in turn, he didn't say much as they all got settled in. Only a few had shown, and while that may bother other professors, he was perfectly fine with that. Listening to the small conversation in front, as he looked at his class list, he caught word of a few names. So, at least one upperclassmen had shown. He made a mental note to adjust some things accordingly. It needed to still be challenging for the girl, even if it was more of an introductory for the rest.

As time closed in on starting, Wendyll flicked his wand at the door, closing it but not locking. "Let's go ahead and get started, then." His voice was light, his words rather average. Leaning against his desk, he crossed his arms and looked at the small gathering. "My name's Carter, and this is Spell Damage. If you are looking for a pleasant, life-affirming class, Conception is down the hall." It was blunt, but it was reality.

No one seemed to move. Good. He wouldn't have blamed them, as the subject wasn't one he'd dreamed of going into himself, at St. Mungo's. But life had a funny way of working out like that.

Stepping away from his desk, he flicked his wand to a covered object in the corner of the room. There was a small line of them, about five feet tall, with a white sheet over them. Practice dummies. As one of them floated forward to settle in front of the class, the sheet lifted off. It was obviously not alive, but the body was designed to be as lifelike as possible. It would bleed, and move, and had bones and all other manner of inner workings that would be necessary.

"We're going to dive right in and see what you all make of it, shall we?" Indicating the dummy next to him, he pushed up his glasses a bit. "I've cast various spells on these dummies, one per each, and placed them in stasis. Once the charm is lifted, the effects of the spell will take hold of the body, just like it would a real person. Your task is to try to identify what spell was used on it."

He wasn't going to reassure them openly, but he knew there would most likely be a lot of first years. Some of the dummies had harder spells, but since this was the first lesson, there were a few easier ones as well. "So, who would like to start us off?" he asked the class. When his eyes settled on the girl who had introduced herself as Alcyone, he discreetly shook his head, trying to tell her not to go first.

(OOC: Once the first person volunteers, Wendyll will lift the stasis charm and you will see the visual effects of the spell. If there are any questions, or you need clarification on the information given, please ask. Good luck!)

    "And you're Brooke, right?"

"Yup! It's nice to see you again," she replied with a smile, meaning it completely. "And nice to see what you look like without a mask," she added with a grin.

Before they had a chance to talk much, their Professor had announced the start of class and she switched her focus to the front of the room, listening as instructions were given. A slight chill ran up her spine when he began to tell them what was going to happen. Practicals seemed to be the route the Professors were taking, even though they were only first year students, and it both excited and terrified Brooke.

"So, who would like to start us off?"

Brooke was about to raise her hand when she saw him shaking his head in her general direction and hesitated before realizing that it wasn't her that the motion was directed at. Oh, that's right, Alcy is an older student, she reminded herself, standing up rather awkwardly. "May I, please?" she asked, waiting for him to acknowledge her before stepping towards the dummy he indicated. Rather nervously, she watched it carefully, knowing that at any time the spell could take effect, and hoping it would not be too graphic.

PostSubject: Re: Spell Damage: Introduction (All Years)   Spell Damage: Introduction (All Years) EmptyWed Dec 17, 2014 10:11 pm

Wendyll waited silently for a volunteer. It was inevitable, the dynamics of a group in this kind of setting. There would be those who would refuse to volunteer, no matter what. Others...his thoughts were interrupted when a girl in the front row raised her hand. From her conversation earlier, and his class roster, he knew her to be a non-major. Interesting.

At her question, the professor motioned for her to step forward. Once in place, Wendyll could see the trepidation in her face. He could be a nurturing sort, and tell her it was all going to be okay. That this was only a dummy, and not a real person. But that was not what this class was about. They needed to see the other side of things.

With a flick of his wand, the stoic dummy didn't shake violently. It did not writhe in pain. Instead, it's eyes, spelled to appear like a real person's, grew heavy lidded and unfocused. The face took on a dazed, pleasantly vacant expression, as it gazed off into some unknown distance. A bit of drool dripped out the side of its slackened mouth, and it's head tilted slightly to the side.

Moving around behind the dummy, to its other side, he waved his arm in front of its face, making a point. It did not respond. "This patient has been in this state for days now. All vitals are healthy, so there is no immediate risk. But he does not sleep, or eat, or react in any way."

He leaned against his desk, then, giving the girl room to think and assess. But his words continued. "If we do not help this patient, he will eventually wither away to nothing. He could be force-fed, but a lack of REM sleep will slowly drive him insane. Your job is to keep him from that. Now," his eyes leveled on Brooke, "what could have caused this?"

As she watched, a minute frown started to form. There seemed to be no differences at all, until her traveling gaze moved from the body to its - his - face, and at once the unblinking stare caught her attention. He - and Brooke had already given it a temporary name so she could relate on a more personal level - was even drooling. As her Professor began to speak, she glanced up at him, listening intently.

Now her frown deepened what spell did something like this? It was almost as though someone had removed his soul, and all that was left of Samuel was an empty shell. As far as she knew, no spell could do anything to that extent. Even the killing curse didn't do this!

Taking a step back, Brooke took a few deep breath, separating herself from the classroom and just focusing on the body. Okay, facts. Unresponsive and unmoving. Distant eyes... she thought and then smiled just a little.

There were only two spells she knew that resulted in that vacant, glazed stare - obliviate and imperio. Now all that was left was to figure out which one it was. Listing out the effects in her mind, she let out a soft sigh. "Okay," she muttered softly to herself, completely forgetting this was a lesson. All that mattered was figuring out what happened to Samuel, so those responsible could be caught - if it wasn't an accident, that is. "Obliviate. Distant eyes when spell hits, but would it..? Could it cause this? What did..." she paused, thinking of what she had read in the text book. "Lockheart. He was still signing autographs! Not obliviate, then."

That left one option. Finally looking towards the Professor? She ran through her thoughts one last time before saying, "The imperius curse, perhaps?" She indicated towards the dummy. "A backfired one. Or.." she hesitated, not at all sure, but for now, it was the only option that for. "Or the person who cast it on Sa..- on the man died or move away suddenly, and the curse was never lifted."

Looking over at the dummy again, she gave a tentative smile. Quite honestly she couldn't think of anything else, although part of her wasn't certain she was right in her guess - for, truthfully, it was just that.

As the girl analysed the dummy, Wendyll took her in as well. He'd never been the teaching sort. Nor one to be interested in other's learning. He'd always focused on himself, and what he could accomplish on his own. It was strange, then, being focused on the success and progress of a group of strangers.

He was close enough to catch some of her words, as she mumbled to herself. She was in the right direction, he'd give her that. Though her focus was too narrow. It was why he'd picked this spell specifically, and he was lucky things had gone as planned.

"Close," he replied. "You're in the right area of magic. Both those spells, and the one that was actually used, have to do with a person's mental state. But the real answer is far less sinister." Even if Brooke was wrong, at least she'd been on to something. Wendyll hoped the others would be just as keen.

"The patient was simply the victim of a poorly designed Daydream Charm." He moved around the room slowly, a flick of his wand putting the dummy back into stasis. "In this particular situation, there is no criminal intent. No dark deeds, or people that need to be hunted down. It was nothing more than an innocent mistake. You've probably seen the charms yourself, they sell them in joke shops here and there."

Taking stock of the time, his lips pursed. He'd hoped to get through more things on the first go, but this was as good as anything for an introduction. "Lesson one, for you all: Sometimes bad things happen from good intentions. Not everything is the start of the next wizarding war," he smirked. He walked towards the door, opening it as a signal for the end of class. "We're done for the day. For homework, please read the sections on spells that deal with a patient's mental state. Intentional or not." With a small nod, he left the door open and moved to his desk to get things cleaned up.
