| Nervous did not even begin to describe what Brooke was feeling, although maybe that was because she wasn't overly anxious - she was a mixture of nerves, excitement, and pure ecstasy. Throwing her bag down onto the bed that would be hers for the next few years, she didn't bother unpacking just yet, instead grabbing her moleskin sling bag and heading out to explore the village.
University. She could hardly believe it herself, but it was true - she was starting University, and would graduate a Auror. Well, that was, if everything went smoothly, of course. Passing by the sign that boasted 'Avalon Housing Communities', she smiled to herself a little as she continued down the road. The sun was not overly hot, for which she was thankful, as she made her way over to where the shops were, not needing anything, but wanting to get out.
Practically drinking in the scenery as she walked, she moved slowly, wanting to savour her first proper walk to the village, as a university student. So far, she had not met anyone she knew from Hogwarts, but she didn't really mind, instead looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends. |

| Slender fingers calloused and worn from many, many hours spent partaking in the most wondrous act of quidditch brushed messy blond locks away from aristocratic features. The wind, unfortunately, was against him that day and decided to push the hair straight back in front of his eyes. With a huff of laughter, he decided to ignore the locks and continued to walk through the streets of Avalon village with his robes swirling about him, and his hands stuffed into them. He couldn't count the amount of times he'd been scolded by his parents for such behaviour, but since he didn't live with them anymore?
He had allowed himself to partake in the most simplistic of pleasures, such as not always walking about with a stick up one's rear end. A smile warmed his features as he wiggled his fingers at his friends. They all intended to head back, but he had a few errands to run beforehand. He'd been at Merlin's Academy for several years now, and was a senior, ready to take on the world as an auror. His parents had been convinced that after training to be one for a year, he would give up on his "foolish" (in their opinion) dream and settle for something much more approachable, but he hadn't.
He loved the hands-on work, that rush of adrenaline as he slid beneath obstacles and leaped over walls, all with his wand at the ready. He also liked the fact that he was a capable fighter even without his wand, and a few wandless charms meant he could block spells tossed his way if disarmed. As of right now, unfortunately, his head was in the clouds and he didn't notice the figure twirling their wand about like some kind of idiot until a moment too late to grab their hand and tell them to be careful. Sparks shot out the end and sent a flurry of leaves towards a red-headed figure, some stones mixed in amongst the vibrant green whirl.
Without a moment to lose he leaped into action, grabbing the girl about the waist and tugging her out of harm's way as he flicked his wand to drop the leaves and stones back to the ground. The freshman who'd caused such destruction winced and scampered off elsewhere. Caelum released the girl. "You alright?" He asked, head tilted. |

| The wind was a nice change from the heat of the sun, and although strands of her hair tickled her nose and eyes, it didn't really bother her as much. At least, it didn't bother her once she added a few more centimetres to its length, causing it to hang even lower than before; that way, the wind only blew against her back and not into her face. It was times like this she liked her abilities the most. Enjoying the quiet of the day, Brooke began daydreaming, wondering how classes were going to be like, and what kind of people she'd meet. Hopefully the Professors would be nice, unlike some she had at Hogwarts.
As she always was when she began daydreaming, she closed herself off to the world, not noticing anything as she walked. When she suddenly felt a pair of arms tighten around her waist, she let out a little scream, and tried to pull away. It was only a few split seconds later, when she had been released, that she looked around and realized what happened; the girl in the distance that seemed to be in a hurry to get away, clutching tightly at a wand, and the stones that lay scattered right where Brooke had been standing mere moments ago told her something extreme just occurred. She could venture a pretty good guess as to what had happened, too.
"You alright?"
Nodding a few times, she stood straight, smiling at the person who had apparently just saved her. "I am, thank you. W-what happened, exactly?" she asked, wondering if her speculation was accurate. One thing she realized, however - if she wanted to become an auror, she needed to be more aware of her surroundings. "I'm Brooke, by the way," she added, not forgetting her manners. |

| Guilt fluttered through him at the sound of her light screech as he wrapped an arm about her waist, and silently, he apologised for man-handling her. But, he supposed just about anyone would prefer to be yanked out of the way by a stranger than pelted with rocks. After all, she could've been badly hurt, and even if they had the magic to heal it - being hurt was never pleasant. Best to simply avoid it in the first place. Magic couldn't solve everything, after all, something Caelum wished many purists would learn.
After all, magic hadn't created movies - muggles had, and movies were amazing. He blinked and refocused on the girl that he'd been holding, immediately releasing her and taking a slight step back, to offer some space to the obviously startled red-head. His eyes studied the locks, and he felt a pang in his chest at the fact that they weren't the pretty gold he'd grown to adore. Blinking, he shook his head to banish his ridiculous thoughts. He'd been thinking about Jay too much lately, and it simply wasn't acceptable.
Still, the girl before him, whilst not the soft, feminine, angel-like beauty that Caelum had grown so fond of, was pretty also. But young. Maybe a sophomore? He cracked a smile when she asked what exactly had happened - ah, so she'd been zoned out. That happened, most people weren't exactly trained to be constantly aware of his surroundings. Even Cae, with his training, had not been prepared for the assault. Constant vigilance, he thought to himself. "Some idiot was messing around with their rock and kicked up a bunch of wind. You would've been pelted by rocks if I hadn't grabbed you - sorry about that," he smiled at her sheepishly, rubbing his wrist.
Most people he'd just met weren't given the full dork experience, but he felt no need to keep up a guard around someone he'd just saved from a rock-attack. "Caelum Malfoy," he offered in response, extending a hand towards her. |

| His explanation proved her somewhat correct - although her initial speculation had included something more.. drastic than was the actual truth, and she forced back a flush. An active imagination was something Brooke took pride in - for she enjoyed creating wild stories and fantasies in her mind - but sometimes, like in this situation, it only made her feel foolish as she grossly over-exaggerated a simple accident. I can't believe I screamed, she mentally groaned as she gave the wizard a smile.
"No need to apologize - I should be the one to do that for screaming. You startled me, that's all," she said with an apologetic shrug. "And thank you for that. As interesting as getting attacked by a bunch of rocks would have been, I doubt it would have been much fun." Humour had always been something she used in all situations, be it happy, sad, scary; it was her defence mechanism. Chuckling lightly, she motioned to his hand. "Did you hurt yourself?" she asked, concerned.
His name came as a surprise - he was part of the Malfoys, a high ranking Pureblood family. Hiding her shock, she didn't hesitate in taking his hand. "Nice to meet you, and thank you again for uh, saving me," she said, blushing slightly at the last two words. Here she was, about to enter her first year of Auror training, and it had been some stranger that protected her against a wand mishap, and not the other way around. The irony did not escape her and she smiled at the hilarity in it all. "So, are you a student at Merlin's?" she inquired, curious as to who the person-she-wasn't-sure-to-call-a-boy-or-a-man actually was. |

| Realisation dawned on her features as he explained the situation to her, and he let his lips quirk up into an amused smile as she looked at him with a slightly regretful face. Maybe she had decided that her reaction in screaming had been a little over-the-top? He didn't blame her, honestly. If someone had grabbed him around the middle who wasn't his sister or Jay (he wished), he'd probably growl at them and stuff an elbow into their chest. Still, she apologised for screaming regardless, and he wondered if this was about to turn into one of those "No, it's my fault" competitions.
He brushed his fingers through his hair to push his blond locks away, one of them having stuck in his eye in a very uncomfortable manner. "Well, to be honest, if I'd had someone grab me when I wasn't expecting it I'd probably scream too," he replied, just to soothe her. It was a perfectly reasonable response. He shifted a little form foot to foot as she thanked him. "Don't sweat it," as an auror-in-training, he really ought to have recognised that threat before it even posed itself. He'd grown slack over the past few weeks, too tired to be bothered much with anything.
Slacker, he thought to himself, resisting a wry twist of his lips. "Oh," he looked down to investigate his hand. "Nope, all good," he lifted his hand just to prove his point to her - the skin smooth and uninterrupted, a wand curled in his grasp. He stuffed it back into the pocket of his cloak. Trepidation filled him as he spoke his surname, knowing that some people reacted negatively to Malfoy. Like he'd done anything personally to offend them. He couldn't help it if his ancestors weren't the greatest, and if he sometimes looked utterly emotionless. "Yeah, senior auror in training. You?" |

| When he admitted that he would have done the same as her, she chuckled lightly, not sure if he was being honest or just saying it to make her feel better. Either way, it was nice of him to do so, and she smiled in reply. "I normally don't do that," she said with a shrug, honestly not meaning it to be an excuse, but rather just a statement of a fact. "The head-in-the-clouds thing, though, is something I need to work on. I get so distracted sometimes, it's seriously not good," she added with a laugh.
As he raised his hand, her eyes travelled over it, noticing no bruising. "Okay, that's good. You were rubbing it and I thought..." Trailling off, she gave him an apologetic smile. Her mother had taught Brooke some basic spells - ones that, as a Healer, she used most often - and the young witch had not been in a situation that required any; she was, admittedly, looking for an excuse to try them out. Still, she meant it completely when she continued with, "I'm glad you're not hurt, though; I would hate to be a cause of harm."
The answer to her question came not as a surprise, but more of a confirmation. With reflexes fast enough to pull someone away from, well, attacking rocks, and the fact that he did it for a total stranger and was shrugging it off like it was nothing already made her guess that much. As the question came back to her, however, she forced back a blush, feeling a few more freckles adding to her features, but nothing too noticeable as she concentrated and stopped any more from appearing.
Although she had mostly gained control over the changes that happened when she emotions were strong - in particular embarrassed - there were still a few issues. That was partly the reason she chose to appear red-headed with freckles, so that it would be much less obvious to anyone watching. "I'm starting my Auror training this semester," she answered sheepishly. A great impression you've made on your senior, screaming and being so distracted like that she mentally scolded. |

| Caelum's lips twitched with amusement at her words, and he allowed his posture to relax though he kept himself aware of his surroundings. Having her attacked again whilst he was standing right there would be a ridiculous level of embarrassing, and he would be forced to resign from the academy and leave with his tail between his legs, his head bowed in shame. The idea nearly had him snorting - oh yes, his parents would be so impressed. "Oh, I'm sure it's fine to be a little absent-minded. You should only be worrying if you're majoring in auror training," he chuckled.
He chuckled at her concern, though there was no reason for fussing. "I often fiddle with my hands," he explained to her, nodding reassuringly as his hand lowered back towards his side, though he noticed a thoughtful expression within the depths of those blue eyes of hers, like she'd been considering something deeply. He didn't question it. "Don't sweat it, I'd be a bit of an ass if I'd let you get hit, right?" A more easy-going side of Cae took over as his mind subconsciously downgraded her from a threat, or someone that he needed to be cold towards.
He was, after all, naturally a bit of a dork. Despite the fact that he'd let her initial threat go unnoticed by himself, he was quite perceptive, and his eyebrows lifted as... What? Had more freckles appeared on her cheeks, or had it been a shift of the lighting? He shook his head to banish such an odd thought as freckles randomly rising to the surface of a person's skin, and instead grinned at her embarrassing confession. "You haven't started yet, so don't feel sheepish or anything. I was awful at being constantly vigilant when I first started," |

| [[OOC: I am so, so, SO sorry for the ridiculously late reply, Molly! Brooke muse was low, and then I just completely forgot. I have no excuse, just one huge apology! (Please don't hate me.)]]
At his statement, she couldn't help but laugh at the irony of it all. "But you see, the problem is I am!" she announced dramatically, unable to stop from joking about such a serious matter. He had, after all, said it would be a problem, but the humour of the situation and his words had not escaped her. If there was one thing she was good at, it was making light of, well, darker situation, although not everyone appreciated it. To her, it was a way of keeping sane, of not losing her mind when and if things around her collapsed. It was the only reason she was still here, and still alive - well that and her family, and of course, Joe.
"I often fiddle with my hands,"
Nodding, she smiled. "It's either that or your wand, and we both know how that turns out," she joked, motioning around to the rocks now lying harmlessly on the ground and between them. At his other comment, she chuckled. "Considering I'm a stranger? Not really, if you were doing a course that did not involve, well, helping strangers," she replied, winking in an innocent manner.
Lowering her tone to a conspirational whisper, Brooke said, "I probably will be, too. Don't tell the Professor." Grinning to show she wasn't being serious, she shrugged lightly. "Constant vigilance. Why does that sound so familiar?" she asked aloud, before answering her own question not two seconds later. "Alastor Moody, wasn't it? Auror, member of the Order of the Pheonix. Died while securing Harry Potter, if I remember correctly. I think I read that biography they did of him a while back." |
