| Chestnut eyes were alight with wonder as she watched the sun descend towards the earth, orange kissing the horizon and licking at the sky all around them. It cast the typical blue with a magnificent, romantic glow, blue and purple woven in amongst the rest of the colours at play above her. Evening. One of the more beautiful times as day, even if there was a strange sadness as dusk fell. It didn't touch her now, her mood was too bright for her to allow it to do such a thing. Then again, Alcyone was rarely sad. She was a cheerful person.
Most of the time. Naturally, no one was without their darker days, but her darker days were typically her being neutral, or "normal". Bah, to be normal, who wanted to not be constantly grinning at the world like she was in on a big secret? Amusement tugged her lips up into a smirk as she wandered the edge of the lake. For once, she wasn't dressed to the nines, but instead clad in a simple sweatshirt to fight against the chill of autumn, and track-pants. The clothing hung loosely off of her figure, hair pulled back in a slightly messy ponytail, and only the most simplistic of make-up adorning her features.
It was as close to natural as Alcyone ever really looked, unless you were fortunate enough to live with her and see her during the holidays, where she would sometimes go days without getting out of her pyjamas (only to shower), and would not wear a drop of make-up. She'd intended to come out jogging, but found that she'd gravitated towards the edge of the lake to watch the sunset. She wasn't afraid of the dark, not on nights where the moon did not come out to play. It was only a crescent now, silhouetted against the orange of the sky, it's pale glow to be her only light source when she inevitably lost track of time and had to walk back to Avalon village in the dark. |

| After the day that Humphrey had gone for a swim and bumped into another student named Tess he had started to make a habit of going down to Sapphire Lake when he had the free time to. The lake was a lovely view in itself, and was also a good spot for looking out across the grounds. You could look up to the castle, towards the forest, or if you wanted just relax and look up at the sky. Tonight though, as the sun started to fall and light up the world with streaks of orange, purple, and pink, the lake was what caught the eye. Sapphire lake reflected the cascade of colors on the horizon in the sparkling waters, and as ripples moved out across the lake from a small breeze it made everything even more interesting. It was amazing how something so simple as a breeze could make lovely swirls and blurs, almost like a natural painting. Sighing and relaxing against his favorite tree on the edge of the lake, Humphrey let the tension from the week drain out of him. "Wish every day could be like this one." he said softly to himself.
Before long Humphrey saw the crescent moon rising, grateful that he had plenty of time to wait until the next full one. Getting up and stretching though, he let out a yawn before turning to make his way back towards the castle. Pleasant as it would be to spend the night out here on the grounds, he did need to get some sleep tonight if he was going to be ready for class in the morning. When his gaze wandered across the grounds though, he saw the silhouette of a girl looking at the lake. Peering at her, he started to have a sneaking suspicion that it was one he actually knew, Alcyone Malfoy. Making his way over to where she was in his jeans, a dark brown sweater, and his favorite pair of converse, he waved. "Miss Malfoy, is that you?" he asked, a light teasing tone in his voice. He was tempted to keep calling her that after the curtsey reaction he'd gotten from her the last time. |

| Her eyes slipped shut as she reveled in the last moments of daylight, feeling the sun warm her skin even as the wind fought against it to bitterly nip at her cheeks and bring a light flush to the surface. She lifted a hand to cover her face with her mitten-clothed fingertips, shivering slightly as a particularly nasty gust of wind ruffled the fabric of her clothing and brushed her hair in front of her features. Once it died off, she retrieved her wand and bit down on the tip of her mitten, tugging it free of her skin so she could properly hold onto the piece of wood within her fingertips. Muttering to herself, she waved her wand around her until the warming charm took effect, and made a pleased noise as she realised that she ought to have done that earlier. Sometimes, you really don't use that brain of yours, Malfoy, she thought to herself with an amused twitch of her lips. She stuffed her wand back into her pocket and continued to stare out at the horizon, completely at peace with the world. Th wind still brushed by her freezing charm, but it was light regardless, and a breath of heat danced over her skin as the weather was affected by her magic.
With Humphrey approaching from behind, and her mind drifting off on tangents that seemed to move with the wind, she scarcely noticed the other male until he was greeting her with a polite, and slightly playful 'Miss Malfoy'. As she was prone to doing when startled, she let out a surprised noise as she jumped, turned on her heel, and shouted out, "Amortenia!" Yes, she'd been thinking about various potions, and wondering what she'd get a whiff of if she smelt Amortenia now. Last time, she'd smelt something that was an awful lot like the forest, apple pie, and the faintest hint of cologne. A distinct type of cologne though, not the overly expensive kind, but a very earthy one. Blinking, Alcyone smiled immediately as she recognised one of her newer friends. Recovering herself, she quickly dropped into a curtsey, pretending to flourish her skirt though she was not wearing one - which was odd in itself. "Master Williams," she winked playfully at him. |

| "Amortenia!"
Of all the things Humphrey thought Alcyone might say in response, he had to admit her shouting out Amortentia loudly was not one he would have ever thought of. Laughing at her response, he found himself shaking his head in disbelief at her. "Not Amortentia, just me." he said with a laugh. "Surprised you can even smell me, though. Hopefully it's not too bad..." Humphrey commented, blushing a little, self-conscious now. Sometimes he used a little bit of cologne, and he did have some on today; however, usually he tried to use only a little so it wouldn't be too noticeable. If she thought he smelled like Amortentia, though....no, it couldn't be. Probably she had been lost in her thoughts thinking about something else and it had just slipped out. The thought had already entered his head though, and he was blushing a bright red. Maybe he'd get lucky and the darkness would conceal some of it.
"Master Williams,"
Seeing the curtsey made him smile at the memory of their earlier meeting, and Humphrey looked at his friend. She was in what looked like running pants and a sweatshirt with her hair in a ponytail, looking much more comfortable than the last time he saw her when she was dressed up a little. It was good to know that she didn't dress fancy all the time, made Humphrey feel a little more comfortable since he rarely dressed up. "Missing your dress for the curtsey there." he remarked with a wink back. "So what brings you out here? I was over there by the willow tree, my favorite spot out here." Humphrey explained, pointing it out to her in the twilight. That was becoming his favorite spot on campus, and he often worked on his homework or simply curled up with a book there. |

| Alcyone felt her cheeks flush a slightly darker pink at the laugh that he gave in response to her shouting out amortenia, shaking her head lightly as she joined in his soft laughter. "I'm sorry, Cae - my brother," she corrected herself. Right, Humphrey probably didn't even know that she actually had a brother, and it wouldn't be obvious from a glance either. He looked more the typical Malfoy, with those aristocrat features of his, cheekbones that could cut you they were so sharp, the dirty blond of his hair, and those piercing grey eyes of his. She was a reddish-brown haired girl with brown eyes, and softly tanned skin, certainly not the typical Malfoy. But a harder look would make it obvious they were related, if you noticed the similarity in bone structure and posture. "Says that I have a habit of shouting out random things when I'm startled. I was thinking about potions," though, now that she thought about it, that cologne...
She didn't think about it, smiling contently at him. Yes, for all of her intelligence, when it came to herself? Alcy was rather clueless, and most certainly obtuse. She stuck her tongue out at him in the most ladylike manner as he pointed out her lack of dress. Whilst she preferred the more feminine of clothing, sometimes she just felt like being super comfortable, and these? These were her comfy clothes. "I know, I'm not even wearing boots," she tapped her sneakers lightly with a chuckle. For some odd reason, when he winked at her, she felt her smile brighten a little more for reasons that didn't feel quite like amusement alone. "I felt like watching the sunset! Well, I actually came out to go for a jog, but I got distracted and thought I'd watch the sun go down instead," she glanced towards the willow tree he pointed out, making a note that it was his favourite spot. "How're classes going for you?" She turned about, ducked down, scooped up a pebble and tossed it out over the surface of the lake. It bounced thrice, then sunk beneath the water's surface. |

| "I'm sorry, Cae - my brother," "Says that I have a habit of shouting out random things when I'm startled. I was thinking about potions,"
Paying attention to the explanation with a raised eyebrow at the mention of a brother, he made a note to ask her about him later. Humphrey had grown up as an only child, and he thought it might be interesting to hear what it was like growing up with a sibling. He imagined it would be rather chaotic sometimes, but all he had was idle speculation to go on. That habit would be rather inconvenient at times, he suspected. His own thoughts tendered to wander a fair amount and he definitely wouldn't want to randomly blurt out what went on inside his head. "Seems I'm making a habit out of startling you, that's the second time in three meetings. You startled me for the first one. What's this about a brother though? I didn't know you had one, Alcy." he responded, the nickname for her coming naturally. After the nickname had been spoken, Humphrey wondered whether it was alright to act so familiar with her. They had after all only talked twice before, but he already felt like he'd known her longer than that so maybe she wouldn't mind.
"I know, I'm not even wearing boots," "I felt like watching the sunset! Well, I actually came out to go for a jog, but I got distracted and thought I'd watch the sun go down instead,"
"How're classes going for you?"
Sticking out a tongue at him like that made Humphrey grin even wider, almost smirking a little. It confirmed the opinion he'd formed of her last time, that she was definitely cute. Playing along, he let out a dramatic gasp at the mention of no boots. "No boots! How ever will you survive? Do you need rescuing from the perils of sneaker footwear?" he asked, barely managing to keep a straight face. Playful banter felt natural around her, although Humphrey wouldn't be surprised if she began to think he was strange. Even before being bitten by a werewolf as a kid, he'd always felt different from other people his age. "Oh, that's cool, running is great exercise. This time of day though it's best to find a nice spot to enjoy the twilight though, I think. Come on, I'll show you how nice it is by my tree." he said, crooking a finger at her to follow him before turning on his heel like she had at the end of their last meeting. Walking down to his spot, he plopped down onto the ground with his back against the trunk. A pebble skipped across the lake from the girl's hand, making three bounces before it sank beneath the surface and adding some more ripples to the lake. "Classes are going pretty well for the most part, although it's only been one lesson so might be a little early to say one way or the other. How are yours? Getting tougher now that you're in third year?" |

| Alcyone didn't think that it was difficult to startle her - she wasn't an auror in training like her brother, and was scarcely aware of her surroundings. She'd not been exposed to any kind of war, after all, or strife, nor had she cared as much about doing what her parents said as her brother had. She'd stepped every toe out of line and laughed whilst she was doing it, so there was no built-in defense for her. She was warm and bubbly with most people that she met, even those who were rude and closed-off in response. Some shells were just harder to chip at than others. "I'm not difficult to startle." She informed him with a shake of her head, amusement tugging a grin from her lips. Her eyes lit up as he called her by her common nickname, glad to see that he felt that comfortable with her. Though they'd only had a few meetings, they'd spent several hours together the first time to the point that she felt like she knew him a lot better than she did. "Yeah, his name's Caelum, and he's a little more moody than I am. Sometimes, it depends who he's talking to," she chuckled.
She was glad to see that her tongue-poking only dragged mirth from the other male, glad that she could make him laugh. She liked to make people laugh, it was a sign of happiness, and she liked it when people were happy, too. Her moods were very dependent on the people around her, something that her brother said was unhealthy, but she often waved him off when he said things like that. They were typically accompanied with "you're a little vain, Alcy", and she didn't like hearing that either. "Oh yes, and you must be my knight in shining armour to save me from the perils of sneakers!" She snorted with laughter, cheeks flushing at the noise. Woopsies, that was embarrassing. She blinked at him as he beckoned towards her, tossing her pebble across the water and then trotting along after him. She was, naturally, reminded by their 'first' meeting when he did that, though she didn't comment as she sat beside him, their arms touching. She glanced at the contact and bit back a smile. "Same here, it's only the introductory lessons so I don't know how difficult it's going to be - but I think I've got my work cut out for me this year." |

| "I'm not difficult to startle."
"Yeah, his name's Caelum, and he's a little more moody than I am. Sometimes, it depends who he's talking to,"
Not difficult to startle, that could be something Humphrey had a little fun with it. Perhaps he could make a habit of surprising her, and if he got any ideas maybe pull a harmless prank or two. He was always on the lookout for a way to have fun, and he suspected that it might be fun to do that with her. Popping up in different places or waiting for her could become his tradition. "Hmm, that could be fun if you always startle this easily. Tempts me to maybe play a prank or two one of these days." he remarked cheerfully. In the end he decided that it would be best to at least run the possibility by her before doing anything too drastic. "A moody brother sounds like a lot of work. What's it like having one? Grew up an only child myself, before going to the orphanage that is." Humphrey said nonchalantly, not realizing that he hadn't told her about losing his parents before. That wasn't something he often brought up in conversation around people, as it made him think of his first memories. Those memories still gave him nightmares some nights, as they were of the werewolf attack that had changed his life so drastically.
"Oh yes, and you must be my knight in shining armour to save me from the perils of sneakers!"
Humphrey was quickly realizing that it was hard for him to be anything but happy around the brunette, her joy was infectious. She made it easy for him to laugh and have fun, which was a little out of the norm for him when around people. Usually he had the most fun when he was by himself doing his own thing, off in his own little world writing or with a book. Around her though he felt as much himself as he did during those times, albeit in a different way. There was something that felt good about being able to talk openly with someone else and not worry that they would judge you. "I'm right here, my lady. If you need help I can carry you, if you wish it." he teased, holding his arms open wide for her. He made sure to stand ready, with his weight distributed back a little in case she actually did decide to jump into his arms. Alcyone might not take it literally, but if she did he would be ready for her. The snorting laughter went completely unnoticed as it was covered by his own, but he did see the blush on her cheeks and he soon was as well. Why do I always have to blush in front of her of all people? Humphrey groaned inwardly at how embarrassing it was for an eighteen year old to be blushing all the time.
"Same here, it's only the introductory lessons so I don't know how difficult it's going to be - but I think I've got my work cut out for me this year."
Soon enough Alcyone was sitting next to him, but she was a little closer than he expected her to be. Their arms were even touching, causing his cheeks to heat up once more. This time though, (unlike the first time she'd touched his arm), Humphrey found he didn't really mind the contact all that much. He looked over at her and smiled nervously, wondering if she was as aware of the contact as he was. Where his arm was touching hers, it felt extra sensitive and he shivered slightly at it. "Well if you ever want to do team study sessions let me know, I may not be in all your classes but I can always help. Us Ravenclaws had quite a few team study sessions with multiple years, because even the young ones always wanted to learn what the advanced students were. So don't be shy about it, even if you just want somebody to hang out with while you work." he offered. It's possible Humphrey was offering this with the ulterior motive of spending more time with Alcy, but that was only part of it as he was sincerely willing to help if she wanted it.

| A few strands of hair, loose from the ponytail, swirled in front of her eyes as she shook her head with an amused laugh. She lifted a hand to press over her heart in mock-betrayal as she grinned at Humphrey. "You plot such dastardly things against me, Humphrey! How could you?" She teased, nudging his side lightly with her elbow as she dropped the theatrics. "But really, if you pranked me, I'd probably fall for it. Just try not to give me a heart-attack with your wicked tricks, okay?" She supposed that come Halloween next year, she'd have to watch out for the scary things that Humphrey could startle her with. Oh dear, he'd probably be hearing lots of her random thoughts if that were the case. She shook her head lightly as Humphrey inquired as to what having a brother was like - Cae wasn't moody so much as... Double-sided? He could switch his outward appearance with the blink of an eye. "He's wonderful, really. You just don't know what side of him you're going to get sometimes." No, Cae's outward appearance reflected how he felt on the inside in ways that only those that knew him could tell.
For instance, when he became stoic and difficult-to-read, that meant something was troubling him, or he felt uncomfortable with the people at hand. If the two of them were alone, that meant the former rather than the latter. "An... orphanage? I'm sorry to hear that," her eyes widened as she turned her head to look at him, compassion bright in the chestnut depths of her gaze. "Growing up with him was alright, though he felt the pressure of our parents more keenly. They expect more of him, see, 'cause he's the oldest and the male of the family," he was expected to continue the pureblood lineage too, something he had not interest in. That wasn't his fault though - his heart had been captured by a muggleborn from the word 'go'. "I had a sister, too." Her tone dropped from that typically warm tone to a slightly more sombre one at the mention of Capella. "But having a sibling that you get along with growing up is good, because you're never alone."
Alcyone was pleased that he didn't shift away from her when she settled beside him. Even through their clothing, she felt warmed by the contact between their frames, though it wasn't so much because she realised that she was affected by him as it was that she believed it was progress - he'd seemed wary when she'd squeezed his arm last time, but now he looked quite content to have her close to him. "Me? Be shy about something? You'd think you'd have figured out that I'm not at all shy by now," she replied with a laugh, her back rested against the tree. She tipped her head up to look at the stars, the sky now shades of light and dark blue as the sun was swallowed mostly by the horizon. Night had descended upon the duo. Pinpricks of light scattered themselves across the expanse of inky blue above the two of them, and she smiled. Night time was peaceful. "But I'll keep it in mind. If anything, I can have someone to groan too when I can't be bothered doing my work." |

| "You plot such dastardly things against me, Humphrey! How could you?"
"But really, if you pranked me, I'd probably fall for it. Just try not to give me a heart-attack with your wicked tricks, okay?"
"He's wonderful, really. You just don't know what side of him you're going to get sometimes."
All he could do was shrug and give her a sheepish smile before nudging her back lightly. Humphrey couldn't just let her push him around without fighting back a little after all, he made sure to keep his strength in check though and not accidentally forget and unwittingly release some of his werewolf strength on her. "My pranks aren't all that dastardly, don't worry. I keep them lighthearted and fun." he assured her. When she admitted that she would be easy prey for pranks though ideas started to pop into his head. He would certainly enjoy April Fool's this year, that was for sure. "No worries about that, I wouldn't risk the life of my favorite person." Humphrey said honestly. The words had left his lips before he realized what he'd said, and he gradually started turning pink, and then bright red. Did I really just tell her that? Paying attention to her talking about her brother and his different sides, he had to admit that sounded confusing. "Sounds complicated, but I'm glad you two get along." he told her with a small smile.
"An... orphanage? I'm sorry to hear that,"
The question of orphanage had him nodding, a distant look in his eyes as he thought about where he'd grown up. It was rather crazy with all of the kids around, and seeing his most of his friends get adopted into homes. A few times he'd made friends, but he lost them to other families before he could develop any real bonds. Humphrey suspected it was part of the reason he hadn't made many friends at Hogwarts either, he was used to people simply disappearing from his life. "Yes, an orphanage. Alcy, there's something I need to tell you about...it has to do with when I became an orphan. It's not easy to talk about it so if it takes a while for me to get it out, just bear with me okay?" he asked, searching her eyes for the reassurance he usually felt around her. Before they spent more time together he thought she deserved to know what kind of person she was hanging out with....a werewolf.
"Growing up with him was alright, though he felt the pressure of our parents more keenly. They expect more of him, see, 'cause he's the oldest and the male of the family,"
"I had a sister, too."
"But having a sibling that you get along with growing up is good, because you're never alone."
From the sound of what she was saying, it seemed she had gotten the better end of the deal. "That can't be easy for him. Good thing he has such a cool sister to help him handle the pressure." Humphrey replied with a wink. When she mentioned having had a sister, he gave her a sympathetic look. He knew how hard it was to lose someone, having lost his parents at a young age. "I'm sorry. But I'm glad you have your brother to keep you company." Although he had gotten used to managing things on his own, and became self-reliant because of it, he imagined it would be nice not having so lonely a childhood as he did. You had to deal with the hand life gives you though, that was simply how life worked. Considering all that he'd been through, Humphrey knew he could have turned out much worse than he had.
"Me? Be shy about something? You'd think you'd have figured out that I'm not at all shy by now,"
"But I'll keep it in mind. If anything, I can have someone to groan too when I can't be bothered doing my work."
Alcyone's remark was all too true and had him laughing once again, as he so often was around the girl. Humphrey was gradually starting to treasure their time together and he knew that he wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now. Turning his head to look deeply into her beautiful eyes, he gave her his best smile. "Don't worry, I have. Rather glad you aren't shy, because I am enough for both of us." he admitted. Being this close to Alcy and looking into her eyes started to send warm feelings through his chest, and before his courage deserted him he slipped his fingers through hers, lacing their hands together. His heart was pounding the entire time as a blush appeared, but he was determined and didn't remove his hand. The night was lovely, the stars coming out, and he couldn't help but think how beautiful she looked. When she spoke again it startled him a little, and it took him a moment to think of a proper response instead of blurting out "you're gorgeous", (which he very nearly had). "Hey, if that's what you need me for that's fine. If I'm with you I figure it can't be too bad."
