The day was young as Janique started down the road, not bothering to look around as her brisk footsteps crunched softly against the loose rocks that lay on the ground. While meaning to explore the new town, she also knew she needed to pick up some groceries - her flat was void of any food items, containing only the furniture that had come with it, and the few items she had brought with her. With her purse tucked away in the handbag that hung loosely from her arm, she stepped into the village and glanced at the shop nearest to her.

"Honey's Candy Shop," she muttered to herself, slipping out her purse to check how much money she had on her. Deciding she could spare some to make a detour - and making a mental note to visit the bank later on - she entered the sweet shop and smiled slightly at the sight.

Shelves and shelves of different sweets lined the store, and the bright colours seemed to jump out at her. What did Callum say his favourites were? she mused, grabbing a basket and beginning to walk the isles, picking out a few different boxes - a mixture of her favorites, Callum's favourite, and those that looked particularly interesting.

Rhian pulled off her apron and rolled it up, stuffing it in her messenger bag. It was still early enough in the day that she had time to check out other shops in the village. She'd spent so much time working over the last few weeks at the pub, that perusing the neighboring stores hadn't been a high priority. But Tess was off doing her own stuff today, leaving the girl with nothing really to do, so she meandered down the lane.

Taking a look in the windows here and there, her steps were slow. The sun was out, warming her skin wonderfully. In the black t-shirt and jean shorts she wore for work, she was glad for the warm breeze blowing through her hair. It had been hell working when the heat got bad, as wizards hadn't really figured out the idea of air conditioning. Oh yes, they could use a charm to regulate the temperature, but the Black Cauldron wasn't necessarily the kind to cater to their customers.

A sign caught her eye, one that she couldn't just walk past: a sweets shop. The morning had been rather good, as far as tips went, so she allowed herself a bit of a treat. Walking in, she heard a soft chime that signaled that someone had come through the door. Knowing that she shouldn't let herself get too crazy, she shoved her hands in her pockets to protect herself...from herself.

Walking through the isles, she grabbed a couple chocolate frogs. They weren't her favorite, but she always had fun eating them with Tess, and the girl could use a pick-me-up. Looking up and down the aisles, her lips pursed as she searched for one of her favorites. Where could they be? She spotted another girl a few feet away with a basket of items. Not usually one to bother others, she figured what could it hurt.

"Hey, have you seen the Sugar Quills anywhere?" Brushing her hair behind her ear, she smiled politely at the other girl.

As she continued walking down the different isles, a slight smile formed as she briefly wondered what her mother would think of this - Cheryl was never one to approve sweets of any kind, with the exception of chocolate. Of course, this had all been Before, when everything was still happy and everyone was where they were supposed to be. But now, it seemed to her, there were two Befores and two Afters - one for each respective parent. Still, even though the first Before was something she missed, this second After was the best thing that had ever happened.

In an act of sheer mockery, Jani grabbed a box of pink coconut squares, the only thing her mother ever ate that came from a candy store - and ever then, on special occasions, like her birthday or Christmas. Mentally toasting both parents - wherever they were, and whatever they were doing - she chucked it into her basket with a smirk. For you, mother dearest, because I love you so much, she thought, resisting the temptation to chuckle aloud; she didn't want others to think she was loosing her mind.

Truth be told, she was the most free she had ever felt in her entire life. The departure of her mother was indeed one of the best things that woman had ever done for her, and if she were to be completely honest, no tears were lost over the woman-who-called-herself-a-mother. Hurt was not something that Janique felt, unlike when her father had left, because, when he left, it was as though her mother did too.

Startled out of her thoughts when a voice cut through the images of her parents, she turned slightly to see another witch, around her age, standing there. Not recognizing her, she took the girl in, wondering if she was a student as well. Wondering for a brief moment if it was truly her that was being address, a quick glance behind her proved that nobody else was close enough, and she turned back, returning the polite smile.

"They're further down the aisle, back there," she replied, pointing a thumb over she shoulder, indicating where she had come from.

Melody walked into the store. She looked around for a bit, she considered getting some chocolate frog cards but then she often got her mother which got boring after a while. Maybe she'd get Merlin if she was lucky.
What she really wanted were some sugar quills though, sucking on them helped her study and she was going to have to do a lot of studying once the Academy term officially started. She moved further down the aisle passing two woman as she did so.
"Excuse me," Melody said as she waked around them. She hoped the sugar quills weren't far off.
